[Released] Harry Potter saga - open matte
#21
Both Deathly Hallows "IMAX" reconstruction are possible; while part 2 would be "normal" - half letterbox, half fullscreen - part 1 would be almost all letterbox, with just the "three brothers" animation fullscreen, and eventually few shots here and there.

As I wrote before, as I should put in sync BD in any case, produce an "IMAX" reconstrucion would be quite easy!

#7 Seems like it may be a contender for 3 versions - P/S, IMAX, and a best of Both, since the P/S is open matte somewhat.

Out of curiosity, will releases be strictly Open Matte/Pan+Scan, or are you intending to do mixed aspect ratio using the BDs in place of the P/S portions? Or... even more daring, perhaps a release where the Pan and Scan is mixed with the BD, leaving black rectangles in the corner Big Grin

Also, I've been trying to convert 1 and 2 to 23.976fps, but they appear to have a strange pulldown pattern. Are you running into this as well, or do you have any suggestions?

If you have the same files for 1 and 2 that I once tried to work with, they are indeed strange and full of errors according to video repair tools.
If I remember correctly, here is what I did to make the second one work better:
  1. Fixed it using a repair program, I have mpeg2repair.exe beside the file on my hard drive so that is probably what I used back then
  2. Indexed it using DGIndex (Accepted to fix the file when asked)
  3. Used MPEG2Source in avisynth with SmartDecimate to get back 23.976fps
I ended up with duplicates frames and glitches in the output but at least it worked.
I have a very similar quality file for the second movie but it has a logo, I can provided it if needed.

Welcome on "active" forum, babuin! ;D Ok

Well, I have the "usual" HDTV files found on line, so I guess they are the same; still not worked on them (yet), but I would follow your advice, thanks! I can't find mpeg2repair, so it is greatly needed!

And yes, of course HP2 second source would be great!!!

Fullscreen 1.33:1 vs widescreen 2.40:1 (only first four films): http://plum.cream.org/HP/

1.78:1 is somewhat the best of both world; wider than fullscreen, taller than widescreen (apart for HP3, where heigth is the same of the fullscreen, only width is bigger)

HP2: it has tiny black borders, 4 pixels horizontal, 10 vertical, sometimes on two borders, sometimes on three or four... they are not very noticeable, but now that I know they are there, I can't stop to think about them! Wink
Possible solutions:
  1. leave it "as is"
  2. center the image, leaving the same borders throughout the whole film
  3. upscale the image to fill the 1920x1080 HD screen
  4. inpaint the borders
I've tested the latter, and result, albeit not always perfect, is quite satisfactory; I must admit that film is quite dark, so in those scenes it doesn't matter which solution would be used.

Final credits: first two films have open matte credits; the others have them letterbox (apart HP6 which has them cropped); solution would be to stretch them to fill the 1920x1080 HD screen (using the BD as replacement for HP6); as they contains only text and animation, result is not that bad at all!

Film 1 is missing a single field at the beginning.

Code:
SeparateFields()
DuplicateFrame(0)
SelectEvery(5,0,1,3,4)
Weave()
AssumeFPS("ntsc_film")

Fixes it.

Thanks!

To all you, Harry Potter fans: have you made your homeworks, searching for HP7 fullscreen 1.78:1? Even an SD would be helpful, even if, of course, a 1080i/p would be preferable... Wink

I sent a PM with 2 different Spanish copies of HP7. They're not great (one has logos and advertisements), but it might help.

Thanks for the files!

I must admit they are not exceptional, but, until an eventual better source would emerge, these would be really useful! Ok

Update:

babouin has uploaded HP 8 HDTV broadcast - "just" 140GB, give or take Eek THANKS!!!

I'm (slowly) downloading it, it would take a couple of days; the end credits are just ready; unfortunately, they are sped up; luckily, the first part (the one with "nice" texts) stays exactly in the center, so no problem replacing it with BD, and second part could easily be recreated perfectly using the BD as well.
