Sadly 99.99% (and counting) of movies released for home viewing - discs or web - do not have the full image found on the film/digital frame - one notable exception that comes to my mind is Dawn of the Dead (1978): http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare...lu-ray.htm

Or is there only one DVD version and one Blu-ray version for each movie, with each new edition or combo pack just using the same image again?

I believe this is the case from my research. The point of the project was to bring that extra top and bottom (from the SD DVD) up to match the quality of the native 1080 res of the blu ray.

So you're getting essentially a high quality 'middle part' with gradual fade off to up-res'd SD top and bottom for more picture.

I will caveat that when you are comparing sources in Mortal Kombat you need to look at a variety of scenes. There are plenty of scenes (mainly ones with heavy VFX/CG) that aren't a good comparison.

I taped this movie off TV when I was a kid and I always felt that version felt "bigger" than my blu-ray did. Now I know why! Very cool of you for doing this.
