1953 Stamper? This thread is about TV. There are plenty of shows that were conceived and shot in 4:3. The blu ray box set of Twin Peaks is pillarboxed. The X files didn't consider widescreen safe shooting until a few seasons in and didn't commit fully until much later. Joss Whedon is mad as hell about the 16:9 cropping of Buffy.

Malcolm In The Middle was made with a 16:9 ratio in Linwood Boomer's mind but you can still see a couple of technical stuff in the open matte area such as lightings, crew members or boom mics. Only in the first two seasons though.
