The Abyss
#1
For all those clever and in the know The Abyss has just appeared on UK Netflix and the transfer is decent in HD. I personally prefer my Directors Pan and Scan Laserdisc but that’s just me.

Somebody might wanna grab that!

Is it better/different than previously available Web-DL?

I have an awful feeling that when Cameron used his own money to finish the film for home video, he made the mistake of doing the effects in standard definition or worse (since it has never been anamorphic).

It wouldn't be the first time that happened.

The Abyss Special Edition was finished on film and shown theatrically (in a limited capacity). I'll check out Netflix later.

I think it looks better personally and I don’t recall having seen it looking this good before. I’m also suspicious it’s not the special edition. Usually Netflix will say if it’s the special edition or directors cut of a movie. I’m about to board a plane so can’t check at the moment.

Cool, but the mpeg2 HD rip is already very nice looking.

A this point I don't see the use of releasing it on Blu-ray, it needs to be release in 4K direct.

The Netflix stream looks pretty darned good detail wise although there are the usual compression artifacts. It includes the rat scene which was always cut from UK releases. I'll give it a proper watch soon and when I get time I'll cap it. Hopefully True Lies is not far behind!

There is the mpeg2 and I think another web-dl of lesser quality going around, maybe combining the three could get the best results?
