I'm not sure why you'd want the job to be done by ear as these are not brand new movies. It's easy to extract the subs from the Blu-ray or DVD, even poorly made, to use as basis. I actually have done that already for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly MGM extended 4K remastered.

I was hoping to use subtitles accurate to the French dialogue, seeing that the French dubs of Sergio Leone's films are seen by many as the definitive dubs of his films.

Oh, well, that's not how subtitles work. Subtitling is not just about translating. It's as much about translating as it is about math. It's about translating within the constraints of space and time as lines are limited in signs (like a tweet if you want) and what can be read is limited to the duration of each subtitle. And the video editing has to be taken into account so it follows the cuts. Plus, the French dub calls Angel Eye "Sentenza", so there would be discrepancies. These movies are particular and complicated as there are no actual original language audio track. But I guess I can make another version listening to the French dub and see what I can keep from it in a subtitle form if it fits.

Sure. Thanks! (BTW I've seen a laser videodisc copy of the English version with a jacket that consistently refers to Angel Eyes as "Setenza"--with one N, believe it or not.)

All right, thanks. I will try avs2bdnxml, then.
EDIT: well, no luck in finding a GUI so far, so that's not for me.

So you redo all the syncs? That must be one hell of a hard work. Yep, most french DVD subtitles have weird syncs. It's really sad the syncs don't follow the original cinema releases syncs.

Yes, I redo each subtitle one by one, following the actual rules of subtitling, as it is my real job, so... I'm that nuts that I even do it on my spare time. Of course there are movies like John Rambo, John Wick or Predator that have barely 500 subs. And others have about 2 000 subs. Usually, it's around 1 100.

Take Fight Club or The Hateful Eight, they're over 2000 subs! Then again, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Extended Cut is just around 1100. So, running time is not always a factor. There are contemplative or "mood" movies and more talky ones. A 2-hour Alien is in the 700, yet a 2-hour Rocky is 1500, and Die Hard 3 is 1700!

Hey, guys.
I have acquired some second-hand "VOST" VHS in the past from sellers on Priceminister, and I'm currently in the process of acquiring one of The Silence of the Lambs because of the brand new Criterion remaster that has awakened my interest. The MGM DVD/Blu-ray have crappy French subtitles and even though I managed to obtain better ones out of a movie channel, they're still not the originals I saw on the 35mm print. Now, since the VHS is from Gaumont Columbia TriStar and from the early 90's, I'm quite confident the subs on it will be the real deal.
Does any French member here, Stamper, Waterslides and others, have any "VOST" VHS, original edition or recording out of TV, of any movie of interest?
