The rule of home cinema is the better the picture gets, the worse the audio gets.

I have to hit the pawn shops in order to find older DVD's just for this reason!!! Years ago i ripped the 384 KBPS AC3 track of The 1999 Buena Vista DVD of the Charlie Sheen film Terminal Velocity to WAV, and then I compared it to the newer 2012 DVD/BD from Mill Creek Entertainment, and there was no contest, the older track sounded WAY better. The Newer mix sounded like it was a flat/unmastered mix, while in the older one, you could feel the Bass from the windmills, the helicopters, the rocket sled scene, the gunshots, and especially the punches!!!!

Could we build an audio treasury of those better tracks synced to the current Blu-rays, all in one place?

I feel weird quoting a three year old post, but I wasn't sure if I should bump this thread or start a new one (forgive me please, I'm new!), but this is something I'm very interested in. I'm a huge Bond fan and find the audio options on the blu-rays more than a little underwhelming.

(I know the BD video has more than its fair share of problems across the various titles as well, but I'm honestly not all that bothered by them... especially with better 4K UHD versions probably coming sooner or later).

I've read through this thread as well as captainsolo's proposing a "Purist Redux" of the films, and all the information and research the members of this community have done on these films is astoundingly comprehensive. But unless I missed something somewhere (very possible) nobody has yet to undertake actually syncing the PCM tracks from the LDs to the BDs' video?

If good LD rips already exist, I would be more than happy to have a go at it myself. I believe I have the adequate software and patience for such a task , and as I said this is something I would really like to see (or rather, hear).

That said, if LD rips don't already exist in ready-to-go form, then I would also be willing to attempt tackling that part of the process as well.... just not for a few months probably. I don't have any of the necessary equipment and my current financial situation (thanks, covid) means that won't be able to change any time soon.

But regardless, I'm looking forward to hearing if people are still interested in something like this!

the ac3 2.0 from the ultimate edition DVD of moonraker  blows away the 5.1 on the bluray no noise reduction used and has bass unlike the 5.1

luckily my local libary has a ton of dvds so
i replaced a lot of the tracks from the ultimate edition dvds they are the same tracks that were used on the original DVDs i think

The ac3 2.0 on the spy who loved me bluray is excellent

The original golden gun dvd has the London premiere stereo mix I think but the copy from my library had laser rot

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would imagine the ac3 2.0 tracks on the Ultimate Edition DVDs are identical to those on the blu-rays, right?

And even if they aren't, the laserdisc PCM tracks should still be superior?

That's cool about Man with the Golden Gun, though! I didn't know it ever had a stereo mix.

TMWTGG has been rumored to be one of the ones that got a run in magnetic stereo and some have alluded to this being the case. I'm not aware of any DVD having this but the initial DVD was minted from the same source used for the LDs and uses the same audio. The older releases have a tinnier mono but then suddenly on the remastered widescreen LD and thus DVD as well the track is full bodied and every one in a while has the feel of stereo though it's still dual mono. It's like they went from a print track to a master track.

Doggone it I swear I'm going to get some kind of audio capture setup running. Too many discs to capture so little time...

I might add that even for the "picture", this is only partly the case as despite the often effectively higher sharpness, nowdays we also tend to have all that boosted-contrast, orange & teal and DNR crap (the latter fortunately being less of an issue now with UHD releases it seems).
