[Idea] x264 BD compliant "perfect" settings - faster version
#21
Not constant bitrate (CBR) Evit, constant rate factor (CRF). CRF adjusts the bitrate/compression accordingly to maintain a constant perceived visual quality. There's a little bit of trial and error as different sources will react differently at a given CRF value.

Ive been encoding with these settings for sometime now.
I was wondering if you still stand by all these settings or have you tweeked them any?
I suppose most are going to x265 now, but im still going BD compliant.

I use the slow and veryslow presets depending on source, but there is no noticeable difference to my eyes.
Just a x2 speed difference on encoding.

In your description...

"to retain grain, better to not go under 20/22mbps for 2.35:1 and 28/30mbps for 1.78:1/1.85:1"

Does the 20 / 22mbps and 28 / 30mbps mean the avg bitrate / maxrate settings.
Sounds like a stupid question but I'm unsure if you mean 20 to 22mbps or 28 to 30mbps avg bitrate depending on source AR Smile

Thank you for putting these technical threads together, they are a great help and a major part of the forum.

As you said it refers to the aspect ratio of the source, scope features have the black letterbox bars so the active image area is lower, hence a lower bitrate is required. These are ballpark figures though as some sources compress much better than others.
Can't speak for anyone else but I'm very much still using x264, will be for the foreseeable.

Does the 20/23mbps mean 20 avg bitrate /23 (Maxrate)mbps, or between 20 & 23 mbps avg bitrate and keep 40mbps maxrate as per the script?

Those 20/22 28/30 numbers are just ballpark figures for the average bitrate based on the AR. The maximum is set separately, usually 40 but maybe lower based on audio tracks

I'm experimenting right now with H265 10 bits format.

It's great (if your box can read it), as 10 bits smooth down banding in H264 and MPEG2 sources.

So if you have a H264 47mbs video, an encode it in handbrake in H265 10 bits at 8, it will come to around the same size and transparent to the original video, but at 34mbs.

I will try soon at 10, then 12. I heard 12 is still transparent with better banding to the original, but about half the size.
