Check if the component input could be used as composite, too - if not, it would be useful; SCART output will not work as input - you should find out a DVD recorder with two SCARTs, one input and the other output.

I'm wondering if it might just be easier to just get VHS/DVD combo - would a combo player with no recorder still have TBC?

I did a bit of research on the OSSC back when it came out. I was told it was not idea for LDs (TBC issues) so I doubt it would be useful for VHS. Like everyone said, a DVD recorder is a better bet.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Or if I was to buy a VHS player with TBC, presumably using an upscaler to HDMI wouldn’t be an issue and would probably be better than the Scart socket in my TV?

a VHS recorder with TBC costs much more than one without + DVD recorder with, so... up to you!

True, but would also take up more space and, according to this post, not produce as good results:
