[No Longer Available] Top Gun Open Matte (Quick Project)
#11
Your deblockng and color correction brought a smile to my face, liking the blue sky instead of teal and the natural skin tones instead of the fake suntan look.

I assume you will use your previous settings for deblock, regrain etc for the Mex iTunes inserts. The PCM will be fine for me, I'll just add the bluray DTS-HD as a secondary track. I also assume you will be keeping the bitrate pretty high on this to try and preserve the grain as you did with your first encode (I went with two pass, 35mbps on my basic encode to replace all the German indents etc but that was just pure overkill on my part), I have no worries about a large file. Also, if I can put in a request for you to use the Grain setting (rather than Film) in x264 along with been bluray compliant, I would appreciate it.

SpoRv's YAO subs will just be the icing on the cake although I doubt I will use that feature much as this film definitely plays better in Open Matte, I would even say for the aerial flying scenes the 4:3 ratio (opened even more with a slight crop on sides) of the full screen dvd were even better (giving it the IMAX look), shame they are only available in SD. Maybe spoRv could use his expertise to create an alternate hybrid version using either 4:3 or UAR for those scenes alone (the scenes outside of the aerial ones have way to much headroom) using dvd and AMZN in auto overlay (of course, if he can get them aligned).

I'm curious if this version will show as much of the image as the original Fullscreen VHS and DVD. I actually bought a used copy of the original 'snapper case' dvd that has both aspect ratios, just because I can't stand the 'widescreen' AR. Top Gun is my 3rd favorite movie of all time, and to see so much information lost coupled with the new color timing annoys me.

Does it have the new colour timing and the lack of DNR

Tylerburden389,

No it won't, it will be 1.78:1 Open Matte so a half way house you could say between the 2.35:1 bluray /2:1 original flipside dvd (which in my eyes both had very tight framing) and the 4:3 flipside fullscreen dvd, a very good compromise. Remember the 4:3 is slightly cropped on the sides where this isn't, and during the non aerial flying scenes the fullscreen has way to much headroom anyway. As already mentioned maybe spoRv could create one of his alternate hybrid 4:3 (IMAX look) or UAR for the flying scenes alone using a mixture of both AMZN and dvd fullscreen in auto overlay and have a switching aspect ratio faux IMAX version.

Dvdmike,

Yes, it does have the new color timing but it will be tweaked to be more natural by PDB, no DNR and any compression artifacts in the AMZN due to the grain will be minimised again by PDB.

Would that be like those clips and images I've seen here of T2 and The Matrix where all the AR's are combined and we have black squares in the corners? Cuz I'd love to see that too.

Yeah the settings are pretty close to the old ones, I just tried to subtly change the Mex settings to match better the rest of the Amazon.

Mind if I ask what's the offset to get the BD's DTS-HD MA to work?

Is grain better then film? I'm asking because I forget. I thought the grain setting has issues with it?

I'm shooting for 30 average on a super slow 2 pass so I can try to keep as much of that wonderful grain as possible and I always run BD compliant.

I think jerryshadoe had something planned like that. Opening up for the aerial shots but not sure that ever going to happen. There can definitely be a revisit in the future.

That about covers it Smile

I found the AMZN matched the 3d bluray framewise except right at the end obviously as it has the 3d credits so no offset was needed at my end (I'm not the best at syncing so was grateful). Only issue I had in Premiere (no such issue in smart renderer Videoredo but had sync issues with that despite been framematched) was for whatever reason the logo at the beginning was causing issues and adding an extra frame when exporting no matter what I did (whether cutting a frame or not) so I just used Videoredo to cut the logo as a separate file, added it to Premiere and edited it into the original file and that solved the extra frame issue and then edited in all the other Mex iTunes location indents/translated bits with grain plate added etc, and it was already framematched to 3d bluray and in sync. Obviously as your adding the original Paramount logo you shouldn't encounter this issue anyway (in this case, I actually quite like the new logo at the beginning but will accept whatever you want to do).

In most cases I would agree the Film setting is the best except in cases like this where the grain is heavy in which case I find the Grain setting is better at keeping all of it, Film tends to filter it, although its minimal. Like you, always use very slow 2 pass (even though I hate the long render times).

Like you said, jerryshadoe appears to have gone quiet so our best bet would be spoRv who has the skills to pull off a hybrid AMZN/fullscreen dvd (upscale) for the aerial shots in auto overlay so we can have an alternate faux IMAX version, hopefully he is reading this and can pipe in (Random.next, the creator of auto overlay, tends to only do films he is interested in rather than take requests).

I adore the ac3 on the LD. I've never been able to ascertain if it is indeed replicated on later releases as claimed by some.
Looking great so far!

From what I read, The AC3 on the Laserdisc is the 70mm mix.

With X5gb's help of the new master and other components, I think I'm going to declare this done. I might add some more soundtracks later for separate upload but I think I'm ready to release this.

So if you are a regular participating member and want a copy please PM me.
