I'd love to see a project based the HDTV 16:9 and the 1.90 LD versions. If you can de-logo it, I think that would be a good base to work on for a project.
I'd love to see the LD also since I'm greedy but also since its unique and I'd love to see what you can do with a LD spoRv, now that you have those new up-scaling techniques.
Since the maybe, eventually, possibly future Blu-ray will be 2.35 and look like the Cinemax, those copies will always be unique regardless of what comes out on BD.

Nope, I'll use the SE HDTV - because the 1.90:1 LD is the TC, while the AXN HD is the SE.

I'm wondering where this 16/9 HDTV master come from. As far as we know, the Abyss DVD master comes from about 1992 when the LD was made. The japanese HDTV was a different master, but was it supervised by Cameron, or was it just a japanese self remaster from a print?
The 16/9 might have been made at the same time as the original Abyss DVD release, perhaps it was the unmatted version of the master that Lightstorm never authorised to be issued on DVD?

Can't say for sure, but I don't think a TV broadcaster will never spend money to scan a film print, in particular at the time when high definition telecine cost was very high... so, maybe it's that Lightstorm one you are talking about!
What I can say is that, talking about resolution, if Cinemax quality could be set at 100, and DVD at 50, I could put AXN around 80 and the other SE HDTV 2.35:1 near there; color grading is different for each one.

Note that the quote was never in the theatrical (1989) cut.
Only on the DC.
There was one T2 japan laserdisc with a completely different print from the one Cameron used on the LDs, so anything is possible. Back in the VHS days, each country had their own scan for their VHS, so no it wasn't out of reach when you're speaking millions of bucks of sales profit. For example, EFNY would have spanish titles in spain, etc.

Just finished to watch the AXN open matte version; although details are not on par with the Cinemax, overall quality is very good, and I think it has the best color grading... can't say it's the *right* one, but many scenes are very similar to Cinemax, while the ones that seems off on the latter, is due to the usual "tealization"...
