I noticed if you crop the logo, the format comes at around 2.1
If you crop further at the bottom, you might end up with a 2.39:1 version that is close to the actual Cinemax framing, with this being the SE. Interesting.

Yes indeed; cropping top and bottom will result in the same 2.39:1 aspect ratio found on DVD and Cinemax; I'm thinking to use AXN, cropped, for the extended scenes, instead of the other HDTV SE, because it seems it has better details than the other.
After watching both, I have to say I prefer the Cinemax color timing (new transfer). The AXN looks like old video, which it is.
After watching it, I think this transfer was originaly in SD, and made at the same time as the SE. Cameron probably did the letterbox version + 4/3 Pan&Scan + this 16/9 version at the same time. Funny this never came out on DVD. It's miles ahead of the ltbx master currently available.

I don't think this was an SD, just a lower resolution than the one used for Cinemax; indeed, soft in comparison, but still, as you wrote, a lot lot better than any DVD, and color grading is right, in comparison to pinkish whites present in the DVDs, for example.

Yes, it's an awesome find. The VFX shots look amazing uncropped.

Oh, when you see it on the big screen, you will see how soft it is. I think it's an HD upscale from a SD beta tape. Which is about the same quality as the beta.

I know that is softer than Cinemax, but tell it's an SD upscale seems an exageration... I mean, if it's really an SD upscale, it's really good - I compared it to upscaled DVD, upscaled any possible method (SR, PaNup and so on), and they are not on the same level; but I'm sure effective resolution is around 720p; I upscaled a 720p to 1080p, and they look almost the same, while the original 1080p has still some more details, though.

This is a brilliant project. Great Film, especially the Special Edition
Ive not seen any material from this film in HD, I up-scaled my DVD to 720p for my HTPC and to be fair it did not look good. Really looking forward to your results, it's the only Cameron Movie I don't have in decent quality.

Finally I grabbed the SE 720p HDTV; it seems that this is the source of any other SE 1080i HDTV - apart AXN; so, it's better to have the "real deal"!
