Would the PCM be worth looking into? I guess this was a Dolby SR release originally.

I think the Theatrical was PCM only on laserdisc. The Special Ed. has PCM and there was also an AC3 release (which I have) which is supposedly from the 70mm 6-Track.
I was on to a cheap copy of the Theatrical Cut on lddb but the seller sold it the day before offline. Grrrrrrr

I've just read into another forum that the Netflix master is great; anyone knows something more about this?

The Netflix master is the same as the recently restored HD version that’s been doing the rounds on HDTV for a few years now. Has the modern teal look to it though

There are some instances of pixelisation and compression problems in the HDTV so a new version could be good!

I've capped the Theatrical Cut Laserdisc (1561-85) and I'm uploading it now, should be ready later today. Drop me a PM if you're interested in checking it out.

Which cap of the SE has the highest quality overall? Is it the AXN HD? It looks better than the ancient BSHI cap and the French one.

Someone did the HD Special Edition job and put it on the Spleen. It's an hybrid using the remastered theatrical cut and the open-matte SE reframed to 2.35 using DVD as cropping reference, plus some color correction for better blending-in. It apparently uses DVD AC3 5.1 as audio basis. The guy also allowed himself to switch one line (+shot, I believe) from the SE to go back to theatrical for a better delivery of said line, according to his taste. I skipped through it, and it looks quite nice. It can't be perfect, obviously, but that worth a look.

FYI the Special Edition 35mm print from 1992 is screening at The Prince Charles Cinema in London 10th July

The lower definition in the SE parts will always give it away, but color matching, brightness and contrast of those scenes, especially when they're just extended parts of pre-existing scenes could benefit from additional tweaking to better blend in. I also noticed a glitch at 02:15:31. And I wish the full bitrate DTS from the Chinese DVD was used instead of the regular AC3. |
