What exactly was altered? I checked the DVD vs the BD, and it seem to have the same text in the same voice at the ending.

"The forces of darkness were driven forever from the face of Middle-earth by the valiant friends of Frodo. As their gallant battle ended so too ends the first great tale of The Lord of the Rings."
"Never cut a deal with a dragon..."

According to IMDB, the last sentence above is altered. The original line and text for the 1978 release was "And so ends the first part of the Lord of the Rings." The explanation for this alteration was because the second film in this series never got made, and when Jackson's LOTR was hitting the scene when the initial DVD of Bakshi's TLOTR came out, Warner didn't want fans confused as to where the sequel to Bakshi's series went.

Looks like the changes did indeed span to the initial DVD release.

The first European pal DVD is also the same (altered) narration.
