[Help] "PAL speedup" pitch shift... on Blu-ray?!
#11
I don't know if it's the same problem, which you describe, pipefan, but I think it's something similar. So, I was trying to sync the mono track of King Kong (1976) from the LD to a French blu, and although they both audio tracks are from a 23.976 fps, I can clearly hear the music is in different key (or how do you say it?). So is there anything I can do about it..?

You didn't actually specify but I assume what you're meaning is the French Blu-ray audio is pitched higher (by around 4%) than the LD. That's what I'm describing here: the audio masters have been sped up to PAL (25 fps), changing the pitch in the process, then re-conformed down to 23.796 (24000/1001) fps *without* changing the pitch again. End result: 24000/1001 fps speed, but with the stupid 25 fps PAL pitch shift.

And yeah, it can be fixed, but the results won't necessarily sound good at all. I tried it with Near Dark and it sounded crap so I binned that approach entirely. However, I would assume that in your case you're taking mono LD audio with the correct pitch and syncing it to video from the French BD, in which case the LD pitch should already be correct. No pitch adjustment needed. The one that's more likely to be wrong is the French BD audio.

If you do want to fix it, various different software options (including Audacity) can just adjust the pitch back down by ~4% but it'll reduce the quality and cause clangy metalllic sounding artefacts, if it's anything like the results I got when I tried it.

Thanks! You described the problem precisely, I think Smile Also, that actually was my second question, if I can just sync the LD audio to video of the French BD, and forget about the whole pitch shifting problem - but you beat me to it! So in the end I'll listen to a correct audio for the first time...
