The Untouchables (1987) - LD PCM
#21
I guess what he meant was that it only needed a delay for his already synced track.

Anyway, despite the sync issues, did you compare P&S 1886 with the LV 1886-2WS?

Much like what has been found out with music CDs, that the older the press the better and less digitally manipulated sound, users here are finding many early LD sounding better than later remasters.

Don't think the p/s track is Dolby Surround, just flat stereo as far as I am aware. Am I wrong.

I'm no expert ear wise (or syncing for that matter) when it comes to the nitty gritty of determining which track is better anyway, just know I can't stand all these newer fangled atmos blah blah etc tracks of today. Tried contacting ac3 (at original fanres) for his synced track but he appears to be ignoring me for what I can only assume is because I post regularly here on this forum which he despises for whatever reason.

He ignored me on the old forum so you're not alone. Big Grin

Thanks to the guys doing the good work on these LD rips/syncs.

Looking forward to hearing The Untouchables as it was meant to be heard.  Cool

I have both LDs. If I can figure out why my capture setup doesn't like ac3 tracks I will do that one as well. The original letterbox copy was one of my earliest LDs and usually what I've gone back to over the years since the DVDs and BD sucked.

The AC3 mix on the 1998 DVD should be the same as the one on the 1998 Laserdisc version.

That’s what I always figured but you never know for sure until doing direct comparisons.

Did anything ever come of this? The Untouchables's DVD audio was synced to the Blu-Ray on a certain private tracker site.

A 35mm scan appeared on the Spleen from the Rob's Nostalgia Projects. As per usual, it's pretty cool and not bad looking at all, except it has no historical value for reference as Rob does his own thing regarding the grading with an automatic LUT and other stuff. I guess he doesn't have the capabilities to project those 35mm prints and then to mimick the real grading, 'cause once more, I know for a fact as I've seen it with my own eyes and is basically my only annoyance with the UHD remaster, the final scene in Ness' office between Costner and Garcia should be bathed in orange, as it's set at dusk. Bathed in orange just like the airfield scene in The Silence of the Lambs that the common 35mm scan anybody can find also failed to render. Was it from Rob's Nostalgia Projects as well? It really is a bummer. Don't get me wrong, it does look nice. But the main appeal for those 35mm scans is to see the historical truth of the films that are butchered on video transfers, so when they're wrong too, it diminishes the point and their relevance. Is there a Laserdisc transfer that has that orangy dusk color in Ness' office at the end?

From the stills, it looks indeed like he badly uses Lut or whatever to mess with the colors. Worse, I've seen in a few instances, he did V2 color timing of perfectly natural original colors baked prints, that end up looking worse and put them out as "improvements". I have no idea why he twist the colors, his T2 print is just plain bad video looking re: colors.

That's too bad because it's nice to see those prints being preserved.
