desktop PC died. Any advice for building a PC for 4K playback instead of gaming?
#21
Just found out today that most AMD motherboards/CPUs won't boot without a graphics card installed, maybe that's what my problem was, even though the DRAM light on the motherboard was lit and not the GPU one? This was my first time building a PC using AMD. Oh well, too late now, already paid a PC shop to build it for me, base price was about $75 but they charged me an extra $100 since I didn't buy the case/PSU from them. But would have been more expensive to buy new ones, so whatever.

Oh yeah, you need an APU (CPU with inbuilt GPU) to have onboard graphics. With Intel most have it anyway I think, with AMD you need the CPUs (well actually APUs) that have a "G" at the end I believe, like 3400G.

Only some AMD CPUs (the ones with G in their name I think) have integrated graphics card. Some might boot without GPU, but if you don't want to use your PC only through remote access, you will need to buy one anyway. Or, if you're not gaming, buy a CPU with integrated graphics

I had some RAM compatibility problems when I built my own PC, but that was because I used two separate (and cheap) 2x8 GB sets, and they weren't that big about running at their rated speeds. In case of problems, good motherboards (ASUS X570 TUF is pretty good from what I remember) try to downclock all memory sticks just to get the computer to boot, so IMO one of the sticks is damaged beyond use, or the lack of GPU was somehow reported as RAM problem by the mobo

Picked up the PC from the shop a couple weeks ago, and finally got Windows and most of my programs installed.

Nice to finally have a PC capable of 4K playback, didn't notice any tearing either.

Doesn't seem like I can do 4K video over DisplayPort to my monitor while outputting audio-only over HDMI to my old Onkyo receiver (Nvidia limitation?), but I don't anticipate many situations where I'd need to output audio that can't be output over optical from the motherboard, so no big deal.

Congratulations BusterD ; )

I also got a 4K Desktop PC about a year ago, and I'm so glad I did.

For playback, I recommend mostly MPC-HC and DVD Fab Player 6 Ultra (for Menu Playback). Maybe Plex also does the job of playing back menus, but I'm not sure as I haven't tested it (I read it's a great and easy tools for networking to the main system).

Thank you! Was indeed planning on using MPC-HC, probably won't need menu playback, can always use my standalone Panasonic for that.

Heard a while ago that MadVR is good for HDR on PC, but haven't looked recently to see if anything better has come along yet.

Looks like one of my internal 3TB drives didn't survive the transfer into the new PC (pretty sure I didn't give it any shocks or anything), but thankfully I already backed up everything that would be hard to replace on it. Learned to back up my stuff the hard way earlier this year when an external drive suddenly died, had the exact same symptoms too: drive spins up, clicks a few times, then spins down. No software I tried could recognize any partitions on it, and no luck cloning it.

Will have to do more research into ways of backing up multiple drives with terabytes of data other than burning dozens of BD-Rs, though. Maybe just cloning each drive every so often, then sticking the drive back in the box and put it on a shelf?

Sure, MadVR + MPC-HC is a great combination!

I think the best backup option would be looking at a NAS solution with a RAID arrengement. This way you'll have automatic backup and contingency for unexpected failures.

But call me guilty, I have tons of 4tb external HDs and they're not all backed up. This of course is UHD's fault, I try to make back up muxes of all my movies (suffered too many rots over the years) and I like to include as many original language audio tracks as possible.

Just my Jerry Maguire features:
7.1-Atmos (UHD-BD)
DTS-HD MA 5.1 (UHD-BD)
DTS-HD MA 5.1 (Asian MI4K BD)
DTHD 5.1 (Original BD)
PCM 2.0 (US LD)

And none of these 5.1 tracks feature the exact same mix (even after level match), that's why I'm also looking to get the JP LD for the exclusive AC-3 track.

I guess we can say I'm a bit OCD Smile

Hmm, have always shied away from using RAID, was under the impression that I'd be screwed if the RAID hardware itself died, but I haven't looked into it recently.

I'm no expert either, it's just one possible solution. And of course, there's always cloning each drive every so often as you put Smile
