[Request] The Shining European cut remastered
#1
I checked if this thread already existed and I didn't find it. If it actually exist, I apology.

It would be great to recut the 2019 new master of The Shining (used for the last UHD by Warner) in order to match the shorter european cut. Unfortunately Warner didn't include this cut in the last UHD. Even in the UK, the blu-ray of this shorter cut disc included in the UHD didn't use the new remaster?

I'm conscious it is a bit odd to ask "do something please" but I have absolutely no knowledge to do it myself.

I was thinking of doing this but the problem is some of the additional scenes have 'fades' into them rather than cuts. The old Blu-ray could be spliced in to get round this but the transitions would be quite noticable given the difference in quality between the old and new scans.

Give it 5 years and I wouldn't be surprised if Warner's release it to cash in again, it's too popular film for them not to.

Edit - wasn't someone on OT scanning a 35mm copy? That could always be used a-la Star Wars

Y'know, I've always said (at least in my adult life) that when it comes to films and alternate cuts of films, shorter is often better, because pacing is extremely important and a lot of longer films can *feel* long because of meandering editing. So I rewatched The Shining not too long ago and went with the UK version because I remembered thinking it was better. Buuuut... I think I changed my mind!

See, having not seen it for ages, and watching it with my partner who had never seen it, the edit seems to me like it flows *too* briskly at the start, which I suspect fundamentally damages the film because it has the unfortunate effect of reducing the believability of...

Jack's gradual descent into madness, because it no longer feels gradual at all. In fact, especially combined with Nicholson's casting/performance, it kinda just feels like he was already a crazy dick who just needed an excuse to snap, whereas the feeling I got from the book (and from King's repeat comments about how much he dislikes the film for pretty much the same reason) was totally different. The scene where he snaps at his wife seems to come out of nowhere and doesn't at all feel like "ooh, the hotel is driving him mad" but rather just "oh so he's just a huge douchebag then".

I'm keen to watch the US cut next time round to try to decide if it actually makes a meaningful difference to that specific (but crucial) aspect of the film; I suspect that it probably will. Some stories fundamentally rely on having room to breathe and a slow start is not always a sign of a bad or poorly structured film.

But that being said, I wish anybody who tries this the very best because one of my core motivations is that it's good to have options and we don't get things preserved properly by the studios and distributors themselves half the time... a releaser shouldn't drop the main cut seen in the UK just because they want to include a different option!

And don't even get me started on how Das Boot Director's Cut is soooooo much better than the theatrical (and an hour longer) Smile.

Well, the questions is - is it possible to edit movies without losing Dolby Vision? I guess you can edit HDR content in Adobe AE, but I would think it requires a lot of computer power.
