The Wild Bunch

What is the best version of this?
I have the BD that sadly has only the 5.1 remix in lossy Dolby

Is there a 4k or an HD in mono?

As far as I am concerned, the old non-anamorphic widescreen DVD (and precedent LD) is the only (bad) rendition of this film that does it (some kind of) justice.

The restoration was just ugly.

Mono seems to only be on LDs as analog tracks sadly.

Although this had a 70mm 6-track mix. Does anyone know how representative the 5.1 mixes on home video are of that?

there's this, on that organ tracker

"1994 Japanese Laserdisc of 'The Wild Bunch'. It's the only release to feature a digital audio track of the mono mix.
This edition is not quite uncut, it's missing a brief flashback scene. Audio is presented in 44.1 khz Wav."

Japan LD seems the best way to go, maybe syncing the VC1 HD master to it with some tweaks might work.

Beyond it being an old master and patching the mono with the extra scenes.
What tweeks are needed?
Are streaming sites using a different master / better encode?

Ive never seen the original cut and was introduced to this with its Directors Cut release on VHS in the 90's.
It's one of my favorites.

I have not seen any difference on the stream version (it was on Netflix for a while I think).

I wouldn't bother patching anything, I would just conform the HD image to JP LD with some grain layer maybe, and then have a unique HD version of the original cut.

Weirdly I thought this had already been done (by PDB I think)!
Ive just had brief search through the forum (and OT) and can not see anything so far.

There was some talk in the Laserdisc audio needed forum, but not sure anyone ever made a sync of the JP LD mono with improved image. I'm trying to get hold of the original DVD in snapper case, the one with the non anamorphic widescreen version (LD port) it's there and there on second hand sites.

I had plan to sync the mono and try to clean up the pretty bad BD but never got around to it. Still out there for later.
