IMAX Enhanced on Disney+
#21
I understand the idea of offering 'imax' versions of a bunch of the Marvel movies that had special IMAX presentations.  But I'm confused about the inclusion of IRON MAN.

As far as I'm aware, IRON MAN never had an 'imax' version in theaters when it was released in 2008 or anytime afterwards (correct me if I'm wrong).  That was, after all, the year DARK KNIGHT made the big IMAX feature film splash.

So if they're simply providing this new 'imax' version based on an existing open matte version of IRON MAN, why not open it up for the whole movie?

Am I missing something?  It doesn't seem like it's limited based on VFX shots either, since this new version has a bunch of VFX shots with an opened up ratio.  And if that's the case, why aren't the other Phase 1 movies being offered 'imax' versions?

Actually Iron Man has been screened in IMAX along with Cap 1 and Incredible Hulk at a festival for MCU's 10th anniversary

With this being said. I agree. Looking at the open matte versions they could had opened the AR in a lot more scenes, heck most of the movies' runtime. I guess they cherry-picked to do so only on highlight scenes.

It also shows directors intent, and shows up the bluray experts who say its just open matte

Ah!  Thanks!

I wonder if those IMAX showings had changing aspect ratios, or if it was just the original movie shown letterboxed on IMAX screens.

Because Cap 1 and Hulk aren't included in this IMAX-ratio option.

I think the idea for Iron Man was to enhance certains scenes (mostly action scenes), to make the movie more impressive visually, so you have to take the expanded ratio as director's intent.

The differences you see with open matte are just that: they reframed or repositioned shots according to the director (or DoP) intent, just like often, movies are shot Super 35 and have many shots reframed to enhance the presentation.

I'm just scratching my head as it seems some streams have Dolby True HD and DTS-HD tracks added, I'm supposing they come from domestic and foreign releases of the Blu-rays and UHD (or from other streams).

Aye, those are files created using the UHD Blu-rays’ audio synced to the Disney+ video

Also, I wonder why Iron Man 2 wasn't included in this IMAX Disney+ release, there's an Open Matte version floating around. If the first movie made the cut, the second one should have made too.

It is weird indeed. Probably they will release all MCU Films in Imax Enhanced in a later date... [Image: smile.png]

There is an Open matte version of Cap 1 floating around so it is in the realm of possibilities that the IMAX screening had at least also Cap 1 in expanded IMAX ratio (in selected scenes like IM1). The existence of the Open Matte would indicate that at least they could had done that. Pretty sure that's the occasion where IMAX gave IM1 the enhanced treatment though and they just used the same master on D+. Don't think IMAX would had agreed doing it just for the streaming service.

Likely due to the fact that it never got an "official" IMAX release in IMAX cinemas. Considering the Open Matte exists, there's definitely no reason for them not to go back to it and master an IMAX version.

Indeed, even though we're getting more information top and bottom, we do lose some on the sides. Did someone say… UAR?
