[In progress] Crocodile Dundee - Australian Cut HD Recreation
#11
I postponed it at the time because I felt I did not have the necessary skills and knowledge to do it properly. I think that has changed now and your post is a good impulse to restart the work on it. Will do so in the next couple of weeks.

Does the original DVD have a high enough quality to be color corrected and upscaled? I remember it looking pretty crushed when I had a copy.

It looks bad, but I don't think there's an alternative source.

Stumbled across this thread and want to lend my emotional support. :-) I remember even the international cut was further cut for UK video (my teenage brain spotted the difference) so I'd be very happy to see the cut I never saw!

Anyone know why the second has a new 4k master, but the original is stuck with it's dead ass old one?
Rights issues? All the different cuts?
It's odd.

It's speculated the pre-print elements (including the OCN) of the Aussie version were sent to Hoyts and they had ether misplaced or discarded them all at some point. It makes since as the original cut only survives in a lousy betacam video master and several battered incomplete prints held by the NFSA. However, it's also theorized Hoyts sent Paramount a combined print or perhaps a complete textless neg to do their own editing from. Paramount may still have this uncut element in their archives unless their editors at the time binned them all (these goons were the ones who discarded the film elements to Michael Mann's original cut of The Keep and the pre-release version of Best Defense from before reshoots with Eddy Murphy).

CD II was released uncut everywhere (even in Australia by Hoyts) and Paramount has the OCN, which explains why it has a 4k HDR ready to go.

Yeah. There's a web-dl of the 4k HDR version of Dundee 2 out there. I can't imagine they're going to bother with an upgrade for the third. They don't seem to care about that film.

Crocodile Dundee just got upgraded to 4k HDR on iTunes USA and Canada.

Took a quick peak, it's still the shorter US cut. Most of it is very grainy and some sections look soft ala from a dupe neg or perhaps an IP. Very natural color timing though some parts look a bit faded and washed out. Some shots, namely ones sourced from lesser elements and those with soft and super grainy optical, exhibit Paramount's special degraining sauce.

Audio was the exact same 5.1 from the BD, which in itself is derived from the 4-track mag mix.

Otherwise, a step up from the previous HD master. Now if only some label with a Paramount arrangement could put out at least the first two in 4k and maybe work with the NFSA on reconstructing the longer version of CD 1 from the prints they have.
