Disney's Tarzan (1999) Audio Track
#1
I noticed tonight that the Tarzan Blu-ray has a lossless DTS-HD MA track that is 5.0.
Yet the European discs have a lossy DD 5.1 640kbps track.

Anyone know anything of the details or quality of the LFE channel on the Euro discs?

I was pondering if the LFE track could be synced to the DTS assuming it isn't crap.

All I know Is that the 5.0 is the original mix.

Tarzan had a DTS track theatrically which normally would mean an LFE channel matrixed into the surrounds. The only reasons I can think of that the BD would have a 5.0 track is that either the LFE channel wasn't properly decoded or there are no low frequency sounds in the surrounds at all which would result in a blank LFE channel.

I'm away from my main PC at the moment so I don't know if I have the cinema DTS track for Tarzan. If I do then I'll check it out when I can and let you know if it has an LFE channel or not.

I can confirm that Tarzan's theatrical DTS track does have an LFE channel. It's not a terribly active one as is pretty typical for Disney animated features but I see no justification for removing it entirely on the BD 5.0 mix.

the 2005 R1 Special Edition DVD of Tarzan has a 5.1 Dolby Digital Mix, as well as the original 5.0 Theatrical Mix.

Do you plan on syncing the CDTS track? (If not, PM me. I'll do it Big Grin )

Tarzan was native 5.1 alongside a Dolby Surround 2 channel mix for analog setups/home video. When the House of Mouse created their HD master directly from the CAPS digital master file, they incorrectly transferred the audio from the DTS master mix as the LFE channel wasn't properly decoded with home video/digital releases (including the 2005 R1 SE DVD) being 5.0. This also happened with other titles such as Muppets Treasure Island (also a native 5.1 mix) and maybe more I'm forgetting.

As confirmed by Turisu, the theatrical DTS (and presumably theatrical DD 5.1) tracks are in the correct layout. However, later PAL DVD releases and the Euro Blu-Rays have English/dub tracks in DD 5.1 and they all use the same digital CAPS master. Sounds like Euro Disney discovered the audio defect and swapped in the DD 5.1 mix file, while the US division could give a shit as to why the Eng and dub multi channel tracks on the SE DVD and American BD are still borked 5.0.

It's been a while, but last I checked the 640kbs DD 5.1 on the UK Blu has an actual .1 LFE and (slightly lower volume and hiss aside) sounded similar to the DTS-MA 5.0. I've also heard rumors of an HDTV/digital print that uses a 35mm filmout transfer (like Mulan and Hunchback) and probably has the same Dolby Digital mix.

I'm not up on the CDTS thing.
That's not decode-able on a home theater system is it?
Even if it is, wouldn't a home theater system be just as incapable of extracting the LFE from it as the 5.0 track on the BD (or does BD audio have a low frequency cut off filter applied)?

Studio Ghibli's From Up on Poppy Hill and When Marnie Was There were both explicitly stated by Studio Ghibli as having 5.0 audio in both DTS and Dolby Digital for 35mm prints as well as DCP releases.
It is very possible that Studio Ghibli intended for the original mixes for these films to be 5.0 and that 35mm DTS in 5.0 is possible, so maybe Tarzan and Muppet Treasure Island being 5.0 is not actually a mistake.

Ghibli's website mentions that both films are 5.0.

There are also some other 5.0-only Dolby Digital and DTS films not from Disney or Studio Ghibli, the following come to mind:
Wonder Boys (2000) [Paramount] {DTS/Dolby Digital}
John Hughes' Miracle on 34th Street (1994) [Fox] {Dolby Digital]
The Cider House Rules (1999) [Miramax] {DTS/Dolby Digital/SDDS}
Roman Polanski's Carnage (2011) [Sony] {Dolby Digital/SDDS/DCP 24-bit}
Don Bluth's The Pebble and the Penguin (1995) [MGM] {DTS}
Election (1999) [Paramount] {DTS/Dolby Digital/SDDS}
Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility (1995) [Sony] {Dolby Digital} (NOTE: A 5.1 remix was made for the Twilight Time Blu-ray re-release and a Dolby Atmos remix was also made)
The Little Rascals (1994) [Universal] {DTS}
Random Hearts (1999) [Sony] {Dolby Digital/SDDS}
Makoto Shinkai's 5 Centimeters per Second (2007) [CoMix Wave] {Dolby Digital 4.0} (NOTE: The film was mixed as 4.0 but projected in cinemas as 5.0, ADV Films' English dub has a proper 5.1 remix)

Would be curious if anyone has any DTS discs that are explicitly 5.0. Would APT-X100 even be able to properly decode it as 5.0?
