Media player recommendations?

Dumb follow up question. Can the Shield convert the DV to HDR or SDR? I know the chipset of the Zidoo/Dune/Zapatti can do something like that?

I know it can do HDR to SDR. I've never used it but I've heard it works decent enough.

NOTE: Do not upgrade the Shield to Experience 9 though!

@Hitcher I noticed there is an even newer upgrade on offer - is that to be avoided as well or have the fixed the problems with experience 9? Thanks

It's now safe to upgrade to Shield Experience 9.1.1 but you will need to update permissions-

There's a comprehensive matrix of Dolby Vision playback compatibility on various profiles and devices here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...=427220017

I personally have the Zidoo Z9X. It's pretty great at handling DV Profile 8 hybrid MKVs, with lossless audio. The only thing it can't do is playing the EL part of P7/FEL—It'll ignore that and apply the RPU (dynamic tone mapping) to the HDR10 base layer only.

The sheet above does say it has inaccurate colors in DV due to a falsely set "BT.2020" flag. @PDB I assume this is what you were referring to?

IMO it's a non-issue. Even my Panasonic UB820 sets "BT.2020" in DV mode. I also can't really perceive any difference flipping between the two devices on an LG C1. Relevant thread on Zidoo's forum. (Side note, RESET_9999 from the makemkv forum wrote the above sheet. He got rid of the Zidoo after finding some inaccurate colors a while back. It's very likely that any bugs have since been fixed, as Zidoo appear to be pretty on top of things, even going as far as working around their Realtek SoC's bug affecting DV black level.)

That docs a little out of date when it comes to the Shield. I've never had problems triggering DV on mkvs with newer kodi builds. And I don't have a way of doing side-by-side comparisons to see if the red push has been fixed but it's not something I notice just watching on a calibrated C1.
The FEL is still an issue, and unless there's some software work around some day will never be fixed. But even is only a problem on discs with poorly encoded HDR10 layers.

I'm brand new to HDR but I'm using the Shield with a Kodi nightly build and DV in mkvs triggers every time on my LG G2.
