[Help] Is converting HDR10+ to DV accurate and what's the easiest way?
#1
When it comes to extracting, converting and injecting HDR10+ or Dolby Vision metadata into a static HDR10 video, I wouldn't have a clue. Is there a GUI-friendly method of doing it these days? If so, is it even a good idea? Would the results remain accurate?

The new 4K release of Heat has quite dark day-time scenes. I haven't looked into it yet, but there is a 2160p WEB-DL from Amazon available with HDR10+. Was wondering whether it might improve things if that metadata could be pinched and injected into the 4K disc.

I'm not sure it will matter. This movie needs a full regrade if you're looking for the original theatrical colors.

From TheDigitalBits.com:
Quote:It’s important to note, however, that Mann made creative changes to the film’s color grading in 2017, as he was preparing his new Director’s Definitive Edition (see his own comments on this at the time here). This means the film is somewhat darker looking, with slightly-desaturated color, than it was before—even with the new HDR grade.

Sorry I didn't read more carefully.
That 2160p from Amazon is the 2017 re-grade that's the same transfer on the UHD out now.

I've actually never even seen the film before, so the grading being somewhat revisionist isn't the end of the world for me. But there's no denying that those day-time scenes look quite dark. The Amazon video being the same regrade as the UHD out now means that the dynamic metadata will most likely be a match, so there's hope it might correct the dark scenes a little.

Regardless, I'm more interested in learning whether it's not a bad idea in general and tinkering with other videos. Heat was just the spark to get me to ask Tongue

its a fine idea.. why not, its done all the time?
Conversely, there's groups like Tekno3D who did brand new HDR passes on older SD (and even new movies), and it looks pretty damn good, imo.https://www.youtube.com/c/VISIONPLUSHDRX

Not sure if it helps but we had a brief conversation about injecting DV (or HDR10+) into regular HDR10 streams here:

Dv isn't magic, all if does is looks at the TV and asks "can you handle 1000+ nits? No? Then let's map that to 400"
It doesn't drastically change colour or brightness it just says to stop things being blown out, the exact same thing 10+ does.
As someone who has all the formats on their OLED there is nothing in them for the dynamic tone mapping.
Heat was ruined by Mann as he is against preservation and is all about revisionism.
The dark scenes won't be lifted unless you make an fanedit and hope the detail is not crushed beyond recovery

I have an LG so I can only do DV and HDR10, but after calibrating both there's almost no noticeable difference as far as tone mapping. HDR10 looks just fine and you'd only notice the minimal benefit of dynamic tone mapping doing a direct side-by-side comparison.
