[Request] Cinema Paradiso / Theatrical Cut (1988), 2013 Arrow BD Mono
#1
Moshrom covered this back in the day: https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/2018/01/ci...-1988.html

According to him, the PCM 2.0 mono on the now-OOP 2013 Arrow UK 25th Anniversary BD was basically flawless. Judging from the cover art, I'd guess the 2017 Arrow US BD is probably identical.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Arrow's 2020 UHD. It sports a PCM 1.0 track instead of the previous 2.0 mono, but Arrow didn't simply re-encode the previous master as 1.0. Below is a spectrogram of the UHD's mono (my own disc), compared against 2002 Spanish Lauren Films DVD (I came across it on the Russian site). I've tried to match the spectrogram settings on Blah-ray.

And for reference, here's Moshrom's spectrogram of the 2013 Arrow BD:

It's clear that Arrow applied a low-pass filter to their UHD beginning at ~16kHz. Corroborating this is professorwho's post on BR:

professorwho Wrote:The PCM mono track sounds pretty good. I did detect some minor noise reduction at points, but it’s nothing too severe to my untrained ears, at least.

So, does anyone still have the 2013 UK / 2017 US BD lying around and can capture the theatrical cut's mono track? I suspect it's already in sync with the UHD, since the 2002 Spanish DVD appears to be in sync with UHD.

Thanks!

I have the 2013 digibook. I'll rip it for you. Wink

Thank you so much, titanic! I'll take care of syncing it to the UHD if necessary.

Here you are. I hope I did everything right. I ripped it unconverted with Clown_BD, and I got a wav.

I also got a 2GB w64 file. Do you need that as well?

Thanks, titanic! This is perfect. No need for wv64, which I believe is only needed for very very long audio tracks.

Spectrograms below. The bottom one is your new rip. It looks exactly like the one on Blah-ray. No filtering to speak of.

There is a short silence at the beginning. I'll get it synced to UHD. Should be easy.

Famous last words. This turned out to be a nightmare.

An initial glance showed the audios desyncing quite a bit after adjusting for the leading silence. At first, I thought it was simply because dialog in this film was dubbed in post, like a lot Italian productions at the time.

But no. I've now compared the UHD and BD's videos during the first 10 minutes. It desynced 5 times, sometimes drifting by a dozen frames between two scene cuts.

I'm afraid it's beyond my current ability to sync this now Sad Consider this project on hold. In case some other brave soul is interested in trying, titanic has posted the 2013 Arrow BD track upthread. I'll also keep my copy around.

In any case, thank you, titanic, for ripping the BD! Sorry it didn't work out at this time. However, on the bright side, the UHD doesn't sound bad--It just could've been better.

A last look at my hectic workspace comparing UHD's scene cuts extracted from Dolby Vision metadata, against BD's scene cuts generated in DaVinci Resolve:
