Variable Framerate & 2:3 Pulldown

Hi all,

Looking to upscale some animation DVD's I have. Got them ripped and was ready to deinterlace until I noticed in Mediainfo that they're Progressive, with a variable framerate (24.58fps apparently) and 2:3 pulldown.

I tried upscaling the file as is but got some nasty combing effects. Just wondering what the best way would be to encode them as true progressive files ready for upscaling?

I could be wrong but I don’t think you can fix variable frame rate once it’s in there. Was that a handbrake thing?

Surely DVD video can only be one of either 23.976 or 29.97, with pulldown flags to inform the DVD player of the correct output. If you have the original files try something like MPEG2DEC to output a constant interlaced 29.97 which can then be IVTC'd, although any changes in cadence might need manual tweaking

I ripped it with MakeMKV if that’s what you mean? I actually had some non-animation DVD’s that showed a variable framerate in Mediainfo but those were interlaced and easy to sort (using Handbrake funnily enough)

Thanks Zoidberg, I’ll give that a go. I’m guessing Mediainfo is using an average framerate figure on the tree report. Could it also be showing as progressive when in fact it’s interlaced? It seems strange to get combing effects from a progressive video

Without seeing the video itself it's hard to say but it's probably a combination of hard and soft pulldown
