[versions] DCPs/ProRes files that i'm aware of
#1
not sure what i can ever contribute here but might as well post about this since i don't think everything is too well known and they're kind of cool!

what dcps are is just prores files but repackaged losslessly to jpeg2000 and xyz12le 4:4:4. they're usually encrypted but quite a few have leaked. you have pretty much uncompressed colour (12-bit/upconverted 10-bit) and a lack of letterboxing usually followed with unique sound mixes

what makes prores files so neat is the fact they're 'visually transparent' encodes and are only encoded in i-frames meaning no previous or next frames are used as reference, resulting in amazing video and perfect grain (p and b frames will mess that up).

apocalypse now "DCPremux" (redux 2K master - theatrical cut): it's public but the remux that's out there is messed up (it's encoded as 48fps which i assume ruined the entire file as it freezes/stutters during scene transitions, probably since the codec can't handle those bitrate spikes any more, i assume whenever they were toying with it they also messed up the colour space as that's messed up too...) luckily the .xmfs were the first things that leaked so maybe we'll get a proper one someday, it's watchable but on a technical level it's ruined. still an awesome leak

my neighbor totoro 2x dcp: 2 of the gkids dcps were leaked publicly, apparently because someone was ment to upload trailer dcps (usually unencrypted afaik) but messed up, a unique video transfer and a major improvement over any home video version! the two dcps also differ slightly.

escape from new york dcpremux: on private trackers

tombstone dcpremux: on private trackers

hateful eight 4k RU "DCPrip" WEB-DL/WEBrip/VOD/VODrip: public but as stated by the teamHD people, they obtained it thanks to their WEB-DL fund so it's not legit. the russian bluray is also 25fps.

back to the future DCPrip BDremux: this one's well known... and public. slight improvement over the bluray from the same master.

apocalypse now ProRes 4k (final cut): on private trackers, it's about a terabyte and has a 5.1 mix. leaked from a streaming service.

needle 1988 ProRes: public, massive improvement over the blurry and denoised french bluray. also apparently screened as a dcp

I'm basically wondering how the DCP differs from home video aside from resolution; is there a description available of how it is a "major improvement" or a "unique transfer"?

there's a comparison on the place where it's available, the only downside is a smaller frame - https://slow.pics/c/DkK8PoNh (you can flick through 73 screencaps)
tons of films have tons of different digital masters, some look better than others. some may never see home video. some are intended only to be shown cinematically, or are filtered/de-noised for official releases.

afaik back to the future is nearly identical but it has small advantages over the wow bd
in needle the grain nearly got scrubbed clean - https://slow.pics/c/nhNVNaA8 / https://slow.pics/c/4EweRlAW

The resolution isn't the thing, an actual DCP won't have any compression worries.
A few of these like Hateful 8 was said to be from a German non DCP source tho.
Those NFO's dont have the original audio from a dcp tho.
The Martian was about years back also
