Thank you and nice to meet you all.

I've been into the magic of movies since I was a small kid. My parents never currated if a movie was appropiate for me or not and because of that I was 9 years old when I first saw Predator. I shit my pants, couldn't sleep and my mind was blown. But after that, I was hooked on movies.

But for some reason I never knew about fan restorations. I was getting extremely bored with Netflix and I wondered why I didn't even like to watch the old classics anymore. Then I came across a video on YouTube explaining the difference between the original Aliens and the digitalized version and I finally understood what is so magical about the 35mm originals movies.

So to any one creating these movies... Thank you! Since I've seen a few restored movies, I found back my love for these movies as how they where once created. It was like opening a window to how I once remembered the movie (especially Predator, but luckily I didn't shit my pants this time).

I know you shouldn't request anything... but I'm still gonna do it, since I hope my story resonates with someone that could help me. Nine years ago on this day, I've lost my son Mathijs. I was still borned and we cremated him in a setting styled as Where The Wild Things Are. Now I understood that movies was shot in 35mm and I hope some one has it restored and digitalized somewhere with the soundtrack as how it was seen in cinema. So not the Arcade Fire trailer version. It would mean the world to me since the soundtrack from Karen O and the Kids has a specific memory to the events for when we lost our son.

I hope some one reads this and thank you in advance if you are willing to help.

Welcome to Fanrestore Limboomer.

Today is my birthday and have a nine-year-old daughter (I've also just watched Predator!)
This has resonated with me.
So sorry to hear of the loss of Mathijs, no-one should have to mourn the passing of their own child. It's not the right way around.
The send-off sounds very special, and I'm glad it helped you find peace.

I'm no expert on 'Where the Wild things are' but here are the Good and Bad on your request...

The Bad is I've never come across or know of an active project to scan the 35mm release print and its accompanying theatrical audio.

The Good is that although the film was shot in super 35mm, it was scanned and finished digitally in 2K.
This same master would have been used to create both the 35mm release prints, DCP's and Home Video Releases.
As far as I know there have been no alternative cuts or changes to the movie (including its audio), so the official releases (Bluray being the optimal) should be exactly the same film you saw when released in theatres.

The caveat is how you saw that, in DCP, 35mm or Home Video.
The DCP would have looked the same as the 2k master, as technically the home video release would, unless some more tinkering was done to the master passed off by Spike Jonez (who I think would of been keen to keep the s35mm look), like done with Chris Nolans first 'The Dark Knight' Home Video releases.

The 35mm print releases would have taken on some small uncontrollable differences depending on the film stock used.
I did do some digging for you, and there is a possibility that a screener (or Bootleg) from that year contained a telecine from a 35mm release print. Although doubtful due to the nature of the film release production line in 2009, it has happened.
But essentially that would just be watching the same digital master with the characteristics of a release print stock baked in.
This can be replicated, and I've done it myself for fun on occasion Smile

I hope this makes sense.
Happy to discuss if it reads like the ramblings of a madman Haha

Congrats on your birthday and thnx for your message. This makes sense. I already wondered if this movie actually would have had an analog theater release. I've probably seen it in digital format myself. Buy since I was already collecting these fan made scans it would have been a nice catch if it would exist when watching it via my beamer.

I have this overlay tool called ShaderGlass which might give a nice effect for this. But since the movie wasn't created with this look in mind, I wonder if it will do the movie any good. But I'll give it a try.

It's an app via Steam that people normally use to create for instance a CRT look so you can play classic pixelart games with the actual look on how it was intended https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWOcucS9_mg.

Per example: Left is CRT and right is LCD.

There might be a filter within ShaderGlass that mimics old worn out projector artefacts. But I haven't tried it yet. It has nothing to do with restoring a movie or a game but it just a filter for nostalgia purposes.
