[Help] Advice on PC hardware spec please?
#1
I'm wondering what kind of hardware spec is required for video editing, up-conversion, restoration, etc.

I haven't gone too deep in to much of this yet, but just over 2 years ago I did briefly try using Topaz to up-scale DVD to 1080p with minimal 'clean-up', however, a 25 minute TV episode took many hours and the results were pretty awful. This was only on an Intel i5 8400 CPU with the on-board UHD 630 GPU, which is almost 9 years old now, so I didn't expect it to be fast with great results anyway.

So, as I need to replace my PC, it would be nice to know a minimum spec for the kind of processing others on here are doing, so at least I can move forward with learning more.

It would be nice to know a minimum spec, but also what would be a worthwhile step up, without going OTT.

It really depends on what exactly you want to do, and what budget you have (PC parts aren't as cheap as they used to be). Topaz is very GPU heavy, if you don't have a dedicated GPU that's a good place to start.

I'd like to 'remaster' some DVD content and upscale to at least 1080p, possibly 4K if it's worthwhile. I'd also like to 'remaster' some Blu-ray content and upscale to 4K. So cleaning up video, up-scaling, up-mapping, color correction, detail enhancement.

A year and a half ago I was planning a new PC, but other things got in the way and it didn't happen.

Intel i7 265K
RTX 4070 Super or RTX 5070
32GB DDR5 6400

It wasn't for video editing, but does this sound like it would be decent enough? Or would 4K require a higher GPU?

I'd imagine that would be more than fine for some editing/upscaling in 4k. You definitely messed up not buying it over a year ago, probably double the price it was then.

I've checked the same components I was considering and I'm quite surprised that it actually works out around the same price to buy them now, as the CPU and motherboard are a total of £450 cheaper, which then pays for the increase in the price of the RAM and SSD.

If I had the money I'd probably go ahead now, but it's likely to take at least a few months to cover the full cost. So I'm wondering if the situation is likely to get better or worse over the next few months - probably worse, knowing my luck!

It will 100% get worse. If you ask me, I would tell you that you would save money in the long run buying it now and paying credit card interest the next 9 months over saving and paying whatever it will cost 6 months from now.
