ALIENS - PREGRADE
#1
Hi everyone

I'm working on colour grading one of my favourite movies ever - ALIENS.

It's really an exercise in learning DaVinci Resolve, which is an incredible bit of kit by the way, as I'm a video producer here in the UK.

I'm after a little advice on posting screengrabs of the work so far. Can anyone advise me on a good place to post images? When I use the "Insert an Image" button I just get a broken image icon. I'm attempting here with a Dropbox link:

I'll post more if I'm successful!!

Thanks in advance

First you must post your image on a dedicated site such as Postimages, for instance. Then you get and copy the link to your image there. And finally you paste that link in the dedicated function in your post here.

When posting here, use the "Insert an image" function, paste the link you got from Postimages (click right on your image there) to your image in the URL line, then enter your width in the Width line, I usually type 600 for this forum. And you'll get this yummy result...

There you go. So you aim for a more vivid version of the same grade which you figured was too dull for your likings, I guess.

I've never been comfortable with the blu-ray grade. I was 13 when I saw it in theatres in 1986 and watched it ALL THE TIME on vhs back in the day.

As I'm going through this process I'm trying to think first of all about being on set and how it must have been felt being there. I film stuff, I have a bit of experience being on set and doing this kind of thing. The first step is to make it look clean as if checking out your raw footage BEFORE it gets mucked around with.

Secondly I'm also trying not to muck around with Cameron's intended look. He loves his blues and cyans. Back when this was released I wasn't aware of any digital jiggery pokery in changing the look of the film. It was lit and shot on certain film stock, then released the way it came out. As far as I know.

So, with all that in mind, and I'm VERY AWARE that certain people may hate me for this, I'm going for the PRE-GRADE, not a RE-GRADE. It's a marmite situation i guess.
