Frankenstein (1931) Audio Preservation
Well, well, well... upon examination of the Spanish dub (and then confirming it by looking at the Italian dub that shares some of the same elements) I have found some VERY surprising developments...

I'm struggling between "spilling the beans" or keeping my mouth shut Confused Huh Confused

Hmmm... Ok, all I'm gonna say for now is that you guys are going to be in for a real treat and the extra wait will be WELL worth it! I promiseWink Happy

This just turned into an even bigger project that I could have imagined when I started this "simple LD sync" job...

Jerry, we figured that by the time this thread stretched to the 8th or 9th page! XD

I know that you are just trying to be funny, but I was serious.

Until now, even with the amount of edits needed to keep things in sync, this has just been a simple LD sync job (ok maybe not that simple, LOL)

But now... this is a whole other thing!

I am intentionally being vague at the moment for two reasons:

a) I am still in shock when it comes to what I have discovered

b) I want the "element of surprise" for when I'm done assembling this

Sorry for making humor when you were being sincere. Habit of I mine I'm afraid. And as I said do what you want because it too is making me more anxious for the results. Remember the thread is called Frankenstein Audio Preservation so any sources available that can help really make this into something is welcomed here. With everything you're finding, Im becoming more satisfied with having turned the tracks over to you. I definitely do not have the right knowledge for this kinda project. Also I only suggested the LD track because I was looking for a source that was essentially a pristine copy of my VHS version. The VHS audio as you can see sounds nice, and that's partly cause it was only viewed once or twice at the time of capturing, but you get an occasional tape crackle which I figured we wouldn't want for this kinda project so I suggested the LD. But it's awesome to see that we are opening other doors here that really make this the best sounding track for this film! Yay team!

The VHS sounds like it's an optical film print sound whereas the Blu sounds like it's remastered with a limiter thus boosted sound hence the difference.

No problem at all! Laughter is good for the soul and I appreciated the giggleWink

I know it's called the "preservation" thread, but I was under the impression (as I'm sure everybody else was) that this just means syncing the LD PCM track because it has superior audio quality. Lately, I have been doing a lot of syncing work and I assumed that this would be the same thing...

Then, I actually started the work on this and... turns out there is a LOT more to this project than people could imagine.

Excuse the pun, but I am now "Frankenstein'ing" a complete, proper audio track for this. LOL

Thanx for your vote of confidence in allowing me to take this project on for you guys. It's funny, because this went from being one of the worst sync jobs I ever attempted and the frustration associated with it, to something that I am having true joy working on. (even though things just got a whole lot more complicated)

On topic of your VHS capture: It is freakin immaculate considering the source and is a very close match to the LD audio and I mean VERY close. Fortunately, we have the LD which removes one extra generation of analog degradation/extra noise of the VHS/etc. Big Grin

I agree with Stamper that the VHS/LD audio (since it's identical) came from an optical film print, while the BD (even though from the same source) was over-processed to hell and backEyedrop

You know it's funny. I sorta thought this would be a simple 'LD sync' as well. Especially when looking at some of the projects tackled here and on OT.com it seems that the main source a lot of people turn to when preserving original audio is LD's. That's another reason I suggested it. Keep in mind I can only rely the facts and sources I know. I knew my VHS, to my ears, sounded better than the BD so I figured I'd start there and work my way up. Well if the VHS isn't the best source next would probably be LD. So I'm actually learning a bit here about additional resources that can be used in creating something. Now for my pun. We've created a monster!! Haha XD a good one though!

@ crissrudd4554 - Remember how you were apologizing for a "long post" and I laughed? This is why...

@ ALL...

Ok, so since what I am doing now is being done to the synced LD PCM audio track, I feel that I can release the "changelog sync notes" for the first stage of this project. Keep in mind that any notes made there were mainly for myself.

ALL of the timecoded edits that I made are still subject to improvement (which is now possible, as the quality of the Spanish DTS BD track is "on par" with the LD PCM track in terms of quality and the transitions between the two can be achieved COMPLETELY SEAMLESSLY and ALL parts that need fixing are available, so anywhere I used the English BD audio will now be RE-DONE FROM SCRATCH)

There will be a second "changelog" that will detail ALL changes to this first sync job. (There is a reason which will become clear later, as to why I'm not just re-altering the first "changelog") Since the timecodes are a direct reference to the BD timecodes, it will be easy for anyone that has the BD to keep trackWink

Here's the direct copy/paste from my notepad notes:

List contains:
Resync splices - 82
Audio drop-out fixes - 65
Honorable mention - 10

frankenstein LD2BDsync notes (changelog):

Honorable mention: 0m 1sec - on LD, the noise starts at 2.750 sec, on the BD it starts at 1.220 sec /left "as-is"

1min 01sec - had to fix 25ms audio drop-out on the LD, done via crossfading custom matched BD audio. seamless

1min 24sec - had to fix 25ms audio drop-out on the LD, done via crossfading custom matched BD audio. seamless

1min 47sec - had to fix 25ms audio drop-out/glitch on the LD, done via crossfading custom matched BD audio. nearly seamless

2min 03sec - had to cut 45ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (right after music, during silence) seamless

2min 05sec - had to fix 50ms audio drop-out on the LD, done via crossfading custom matched BD audio. seamless

4min 57sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on the LD, done via crossfading custom matched BD audio. seamless

5min 58sec - had to cut 135ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

6min 04sec - had to add 41ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, right before second dog bark) seamless

8min 26sec - had to cut 140ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, after humming) seamless

9min 18sec - had to add 70ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, between footsteps) nearly seamless (the noise makes it more obvious, but I suspect that a "cleaned" copy will solve this) EDIT: Turns out that the duping of audio here was too obvious and sounded like a skipping CD has that was a no-go. Had to custom match the BD audio which was a pain. nearly seamless

9min 24sec - had to add 3460ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless (that was NOT a typo)

10min 12sec - had to fix 20 ms audio drop-out on the LD, done via crossfading custom matched BD audio. seamless
(NOTE: there is a slitch glitch during the word "mean" but this is a source error and I couldn't custom match the BD audio without it being extremely obvious)

12min 06sec - had to add 70ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

12min 15 sec - had to cut 20ms on LD to keep sync and to fix audio drop-out, done via crossfading (during the word "Henry," the drop-out is now gone) seamless

12min 15 sec - had to add 20ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, after we hear "Henry") seamless

12min 47sec - had to add 210ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, right before we hear, "how?") seamless

12min 54sec - had to cut 41ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, before we hear, "the bodies we...") seamless

18min 26sec - had to add 140ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (again, during sound of wind) seamless

18min 29sec - had to add 210ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (right before thunder crack) seamless

18min 31sec - had to add 70ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during thunder) seamless

18min 34sec - had to cut 110ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (right before we hear, "Henry!") nearly seamless

(read next note)

Honorable mention: 18min 34sec - 18min 36sec, on the LD we hear, Female: "Henry?" Male: "Step aside!" which is MISSING on the BD - side note: this is the first part that is retimed during scene this much and that the background didn't match and the dialog didn't either. syncing this was a bitch regardless of whether I wanted to keep the LD audio, but it have a slight "echo" (it's not really and I only notice it because I know it's there) or custom match the BD audio which I couldn't get to match no matter how hard I tried

18min 44sec - had to add 41ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (right after we hear, "...give us shelter") seamless

19min 34sec - had to add 135ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, before thunder krack) seamless

Honorable mention: 23min 27sec - there is slight audio glitch that they corrected on BD but I couldn't match it, so I left it "as-is"

23min 28sec - had to cut 35ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during sfx) seamless

23min 56sec - had to cut 41ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during sfx) seamless

24min 03sec - had to fix (2) 15ms audio-drop-outs on the LD, done via crossfading custom matched BD audio. nearly seamless (there is a slight glitch here, which is also present on the BD)

24min 43sec - had to cut 41ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during sfx) seamless

25min 06sec - had to add 35ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (right before "It's Alive!") seamless

25min 09sec - had to add 35ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (right before "In the name...") seamless

25min 12sec - had to add 1540ms to LD to keep sync, done by inserting custom processed and matched BD audio (the only missing part of dialog is: "feels like to be God: and that's it) nearly seamless
---Dialog and source break down: (still unsure here, but that's what it sounds like between all sources and comparisons I've done)
---Source "A" - It's alive! It's alive! Oh, ho, ho... In the name of God...
---Source "B" - Ah, I know what it...
---Source "C" - ...feels like to be God!

Honorable mention: 25min 20sec - 25min 22sec - the fade out on LD is 2.4sec longer and contains one extra sound effect, what sounds like a sneeze... left "as-is" (EDIT DURING POSTING: interestingly this is also present on the Spanish and Italian dubs)

25min 24sec - had to cut 1400ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

28min 07sec - had to add 140ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

32min 17sec - had to cut 50ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

33min 29sec - had to cut 50ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

Honorable mention: 33min 47sec - the scream starts 30ms sooner on the BD and this audio is "unique" to the BD. I did NOT re-insert this because it sounded like sh*t in my tests and looping the LD audio here sounded even worse. Left "as-is"

34min 03sec - had to add 125ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during sfx) seamless

34min 11sec - had to add 20ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (after "aaaa..." and before "twitch") seamless

34min 20sec - side 1 to side 2 change on LD, had to add 2300ms from custom matched BD audio because it was missing on the LD (it's not actually dialog like I had stated incorrectly before, but a grunt and shuffling of feet) nearly seamless EDIT: this entire part was replaced using VHS Hi-Fi audio that matched nearly perfectly. seamless EDIT DURING POSTING: out of curiosity will be checking this one on the Spanish dub track

35min 03sec - had to cut 25ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

35min 17 sec - had to cut 65ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

35min 23sec - had to add 65ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, before scream) seamless

35min 39sec - had to add 110ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (after footsteps) seamless

35min 44sec - had to cut 70ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during footsteps) seamless

36min 11sec - had to add 25ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during sfx) seamless

36min 13sec - had to cut 115ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (right after dialog) seamless

36 min 14sec - had to add 35ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (before growling) seamless

36min 16sec - had to add 35ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during pounding sound) seamless

36min 24sec - had to add 41ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (before the line, "he hated...") seamless

37min 40sec - had to add 25ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, before groaning) seamless

38min 39sec - had to add 150ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, before groan) seamless

38min 43sec - had to add 155ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

38min 45sec - had to add 25ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

39min 50sec - had to add 25ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, before we hear "...now let's all settle...) seamless

Honorable mention: 40min 22.6-23.6sec - on ALL transfers there is a "jump" back and forth in audio quality from sentence to sentence three times

42min 56sec - had to cut 45ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

43min 34sec - had to cut 45ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, between footsteps) seamless

43min 53sec - had to add 70ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, before the clank sfx) seamless

44min 29sec - had to add 25ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, before we hear, "you promised") seamless

45min 05 sec - had to fix 20ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading custom matched BD audio. seamless

Honorable mention: 47min 28sec - ALL audio sources have an audio skipping glitch here

47min 52sec - had to add 190ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence, after party noise) seamless

49min 33sec - had to add 30ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

50min 33sec - had to fix 20ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

50min 34sec - had to add 125ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

50min 39sec - had to cut 335ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

50min 47sec - had to add 195ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence) seamless

50min 48sec - had to cut 25ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (kinda corrects audio drop-out on LD) nearly seamless

54min 47sec - had to cut 100ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during bells in background) seamless

55min 42sec - had to add 25ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during background noise, right before bell) seamless

56min 42sec - had to add 120ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during crowd noise) seamless

56min 46sec - had to add 75ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during crowd noise) seamless

57min 13sec - had to move ONLY the word "but" 90ms forward on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading. seamless

57min 16sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

57min 24sec - had to fix 35ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (NOTE: On the BD they tried to fix this too but it's not seamless like my edit. It's at the part right after the crowd starts yelling [I believe it's at a shot change])

57min 26sec - had to cut 80ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during crowd noise) seamless

57min 29sec - had to add 90ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence after crowd noise) seamless

57min 32sec - had to add 135ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during silence before footsteps) seamless

57min 43sec - had to cut 55ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (between "old man..." and "...she'll be all right") nearly seamless (this one was weird and I don't understand how one and a third of a frames are missing on the BD here and I did the best I could but it did create a very slight click, but listen to this on the BD because it sounds A LOT WORSE than what I did)

58min 37sec - had to fix 20ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (sounds better than the BD fix)

58min 49sec - had to fix 20ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (sounds better than the BD fix)

58min 58sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (sounds better than the BD fix)

59min 12sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

59min 13sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (sounds better than the BD fix)

59min 17sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

59min 26sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

59min 31sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

59min 41sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

59min 44sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

59min 47sec - had to fix 25ms and then 15ms audio drop-outs on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

59min 58sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 00min 06sec - had to fix 200ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (even the BD still contains a drop-out here, although they did try to correct part of it)

1h 00min 17sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 00min 27sec - had to fix 60ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 00min 30sec - had to fix15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (NOTE: there is a slight audio glitch present on ALL sources shortly after this drop-out, at 1h 00min 31sec) EDIT DURING POSTING: This can be fixed with the Spanish dub track

1h 00min 41sec - had to fix (2) 15ms audio drop-outs on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 00min 43sec - had to fix 95ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 01min 05sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 01min 08sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 01min 36sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 01min 51sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 01min 58sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

Honorable mention: 1h 02min 31sec there is a slight drop in audio (but not complete) in this spot that they mostly (although not competely) fixed on the BD. Unfortunately, there was no way for me to splice this into the LD without it being extremely obvious and my initial tests of tweaking the LD audio weren't successful either because of the glitch that occurs when audio picks back up. Wasted an hour on this spot) EDIT DURING POSTING: This looks like it can be fixed with the Spanish dub track as well

1h 03min 13sec - had to add 75ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (after barking, before growl) seamless

1h 03min 14sec - had to cut 110ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (after growl) seamless

1h 03min 26sec - had to add 55ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during howling) seamless

1h 03min 38sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 03min 50sec - had to add 15ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (before we hear the crowd again) seamless

Honorable mention 1h 04min 28sec - there is 250ms "extra" crowd cheering noise on the LD than the BD, this is NOT a sync issue, just audio missing on BD. left "as-is" . on the other hand, the BD has an extra groan here that I couldn't splice in seamlessly

1h 04min 32sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 05min 07sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 05min 31sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 05min 33sec - had to add 210ms to LD to keep sync, done via splicing in custom matched BD audio (during crowd cheering before the growl, also fixes an audio dropout on the LD, the chunk missing couldn't be dupped from LD audio) nearly seamless EDIT DURING POSTING: This can also be fixed with the Spanish dub track

1h 05min 35sec - had to fix 20ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 05min 39sec - had to cut 20ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (during crowd noise) seamless (NOTE: this also fixes 15ms audio drop-out)

1h 05min 41sec - had to cut 35ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading (again, during crowd noise) seamless (NOTE: this also fixes 20ms audio drop-out)

1h 05min 42sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 05min 43sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 05min 44sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 05min 47sec - had to fix 25ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (NOTE: This one is funny because I know exact which audio part they dupped to fill in this gap on the BD because I ended up using the same part with slightly better results)

1h 05min 49sec - 1h 05min 52sec - this part required three cuts and reordering, while crossfading them into each other, this entire 3 second segment where it goes and skips a second forward, then skips half a second back, then a second and a half forward and then nearly half a second back (roughly) there was clear audio drop-outs indicating some of the parts, but they were mixed on BD to make a whole, thusly I had to mix them as well. All audio used here is from LD. nearly seamless EDIT DURING POSTING: It appears I might be able to fix this one as well and I know what happened on the BD audio now... will be address in next changelog

1h 05min 54sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 06min 00sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 06min 01sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 06min 03sec - had to fix (2) 15ms audio drop-outs on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 06min 05sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 06min 07sec - had to fix 35ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (the audio glitch that occurs during the same second about 200ms after this drop out is NOT my fault and it present on ALL audio sources)

1h 06min 32sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 06min 40sec - had to cut 41ms on LD to keep sync, done via crossfading LD audio (during crowd yelling) seamless

1h 06min 50sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 06min 51sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (NOTE: the drop-out is fixed seamlessly, but there is an overall glitch [on LD/VHS] before and after this drop-out that I did not correct because I couldn't match the BD audio right and it sounded worse than leaving it the way I have it) EDIT DURING POSTING: This is another one that looks like I'll be able to fix with the Spanish dub track

1h 07min 10sec - had to fix 10ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 07min 19sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 07min 22sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 07min 37sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless

1h 07min 39sec - had to fix 15ms audio drop-out on LD, done via crossfading LD audio. seamless (NOTE: the audio drop-out is fixed but there is still an audio glitch present here that is on ALL transfers) EDIT DURING POSTING: Not sure whether it's present on the Spanish Dub track

Honorable mention: 1h 07min 40sec - there is a slight audio glitch at the shot change that was corrected on BD but I couldn't use it so I had to leave this one "as-is" (I guess it gives the film it "estetique," LOL)

1h 07min 56sec - had to add 25ms to LD to keep sync, done via crossfading LD audio (right after crowd noise fades) seamless

--- END TRANSMISSION---

BLAM!

xtra note taken while attempting to "clean"/"enhance" the LD audio: (EDIT DURING POSTING: this was in reference to the English audio on BD)

Funny shit, I figured out the first step to get the audio to sound lke a funnel, LOL exactly (with exception of scratches and pops that had not been fixed yet) like the BD audio... it was trippy, because I was messing with some test settings in DiamondCutForensics8 to see what results I get depending on filter and when I selected "EZ Forensics" and then "Single Talker" and then "TDAF - Heavy General Noise Reduction" it gave me the same sounding result. What this tells me is that they were in fact pretty freakin lazy about the audio for the BD. They removed as many pops, clicks, and scratches, (due to the source) as possible, (most likely via automated process too) but for the noise they went the easiest, laziest way about it and destroyed what could have been a decent track if they had avoided this step, because in some places it may reduce some of the overall noise, but overall, the noise IS AMPLIFIED on the BD!

Ok guys, soak all that in for a moment while I work on stage two which includes some major fixes and MASSIVE surprises... Wink
