I say use a VHS mono track for the french mono, for some reason they don't have the desynchronising during the police precinct scene. Also Stamper do you have a cleaner copy of the Chace mix? The one on your U-Matic regrade sounds very noisy and kind of compressed

It was provided by someone else, but like I said, I won’t use it for this project. Too complicated for me. What I need now are ears to listen to what I did for feedback. Any volunteers with a well calibrated 5.1 equipment?

I had two Chace mixes in the project, one ripped from the LD, and the other ripped from the TF1 never released DVD.

OK, it is done for both English and French in both FLAC 5.1 and FLAC 2.0 for a semblance of both a 70mm 6-track mix and a 35mm Dolby Stereo mix, as if they had the budget to go beyond mono at the time. I think it turned out pretty well, balance and all. You guys will tell me how it sounds on your end.

I just noticed Silberman's knocking sound at the front desk, while on his way out of the police station, is missing on the French track. I'll have to make a V2 to fix that.
Thanks given by: Stamper
Argh! I just checked and, as it turns out, the 7.1 (Atmos) track on the UHD will be easier to deal with in the surround channels to get rid of the bad sound effects as there are 4 surrounds and there's frequently one or two with just music, so it's easier to mute the other channels to keep the music alone and not having a patched hole in the surrounds, which was the most challenging when I only had 2 surround channels to work with. It will be cleaner that way. Also, the surrounds seem more in sync on the 7.1 layout in the chase scene following the parking garage. I should have thought of the 7.1 with 4 surround channels as basis to my 5.1 target to begin with. So, basically, a V2 is on the horizon. What's the consensus on the LFE? Is the one from the 5.1 better, or is it the Atmos one?
Edit: Gemini tells me the Atmos LFE is better but will require low-pass filtering in the EQ in the 60Hz-80Hz range to get rid of the modern sound effects residue from the other channels. Thanks given by: Kreeep

Might be best to just stick with the BD LFE if it doesn't require the low-pass filtering to get rid of the modern additions? If they both suffer the same issue, then different story. While working on my own sync of the international mono from the 2001 MGM DVD, I noticed a mirrored shot, since my sync is image based. It's flipped horizontally on the old master, as I checked the 35mm scan and it's just like on the 2012 remaster. Did you guys know about this? I never knew this shot was mirrored at some point. It's the only one I noticed when watching the whole movie half and half:

I wonder if this is also on the modern 4k, since that uses the 2012 master.
Edit: Misread the comment. I still wonder if it is on there, since the 4k does have a digital change (the change is a shot involving a digital knife). |
