I was looking at some of my 80's comedies that have remixed audio and was thinking about purchasign the LD's with the original mono. Does anyone have any thoughts/comments/info on the LD's for:

The Naked Gun
Caddyshack

I have the Japanese LD of The Wild Bunch with mono PCM. Unfortunately, it's not fully uncut. Does anybody have the old analog US LD, or a pre-remaster VHS of the uncut version that can be used to fill in the missing bits?

Is this the 1992 era release with the sepia cover art? I'd always wondered if it was uncut or had PCM mono.

So you're saying it's the general release version missing about 10+ minutes or so correct? Looks like I will indeed have to track down the old analog only LD.
How's the mono sound anyway? I've been curious for years in how it compares to the 2.0 matrix/5.1 audio remix.

I saw that on BD for the Olive films release but it would be now another BD just to get the 2.0. If only someone had it around here. Wink

I was planning to buy it at some point but if anybody owns it already let me know
AKA thxita on OriginalTrilogy
I preserve movies as they first appeared in Italy.

Yes. I believe it's the only release with PCM mono. It clocks in at just under 143 minutes, so I think there's just around 2-3 minutes missing. I haven't checked to see what exactly is missing (I've misplaced my Blu-ray copy somehow). The sound quality is pretty good. I definitely prefer it over the remix.

Fantastic! That figures with what I've always wondered about the accuracy of the 90's stereo remix. 143 mins is nearly complete as the full length version is listed as 145 mins. It may just be a discrepancy on the packaging as some studios will write down different times on packaging throughout the world. The biggest cuts were to the flashback sequences and quiet moments.

EDIT: found a more detailed description:

" The complete film, and the only version to which Peckinpah ever lent his wholehearted imprimatur, is the European version of 1969, which is 145 minutes long and contains: the flashback showing how Thornton was captured; (2) the flashback showing how Pike's lover, Aurora, was killed and he himself wounded; (3) the scene in the desert that establishes Crazy Lee is Sykes's grandson and that Pike deliberately abandoned him in the opening robbery; (4) the raid by Villa on Mapache as he awaits the telegram; (5) the aftermath of Villa's raid in Agua Verde; and (6) about a minute's worth of the festivities at night in Angel's village.
The first domestic version is essentially identical except for the removal of the Aurora flashback, which Peckinpah agreed to, albeit with great reluctance; this version runs about 143 minutes.
The second domestic version (sometimes called the American version) is missing all the material just described and runs about 135 minutes.
The 1995 restoration, which runs 144 minutes and 24 seconds, returns to the European version but drops the intermission, which was originally inserted just before the train robbery, the first half of the film ending with Pike and Dutch on the trail and Pike's line, "This is our last go-round, Dutch, this time we do it right." As the intermission was created in the first place only in response to the European distributor's demand for a roadshow engagement, it has been left out of the restoration. Warner Home Video's current video tape and laserdisc, both widescreen, are from the 1995 restoration, which, despite some claims to the contrary, is to the version that Sam Peckinpah himself prepared and authorized for release in 1969 and it represents his final cut of The Wild Bunch. "

So if it is missing anything it should very likely be just the death of Pike's lover in that particular flashback.

This should be a very interesting track to finally experience. I also rather like the matrix PCM version of the restored audio despite not being discrete.

I'd be curious to see the short cut restored with mono, if just to see how it plays versus the restored version

I checked, and the Aurora flashback is indeed missing from the Japanese LD. Everything indicates that this is the "first domestic version" that the text above refers to.

Here's a short sample of the mono mix.

There's some strange distortion in some of the gunshots towards the end of the clip. I'm wondering if it's supposed to be there, or if it's a fault on the digital track.

The US LD boxset has the AC3 and PCM tracks, and is 145m; don't know about its mix, though.
