Considering there has been no news about the direly needed restoration in the four years since it was initially discussed, does anyone have the laserdisc and want to take a second attempt at this film?
Edit: Grabbed a clip of this and there is hope for something watchable. It looks like an IVTC was performed without decimation, not a field blur or decombing. Meaning there are 4 unique frames followed by a fifth duplicate. (Assuming this is consistent throughout.) I'd like to do more, but any sharpening or clean up would probably be more destructive than helpful. Maybe some debanding? Oh yeah, I'm completely aware the color correction is pants. Someone with (any) skill would definitely do better. Code: loadplugin("dgdecode.dll") Mostly, I'm just trying to decide if this is worth moving ahead. Thoughts? Edit 2: Just tested this script in motion and there is a lot of shimmering on edges. So the latest version of the script adds: qtgmc(Preset="faster", InputType=1) Slower/better quality causes more artifacts... and frankly things are starting to look so sterile, I would, for the first time ever, suggest the use of addgrain. This crap is giving me a headache. Too many filters. Want to really have a cry? (Source: The Alamo 1960 1080p WEB-DL DD+5.1 H.264-SiGMA) Thanks given by: Stamper

I have the ac3 Laserdisc and am planning on picking up the DVD and doing some sort of cross combination version if the two will match. I haven't seen the DVD image so I don't know if it will be to different of filled with edge enhancement and the like.
I also plan to upload the extended scenes to youtube whenever I finally get a capture method going in an attempt to shame MGM for letting the film die.

I'm sure those interested already know there is a nice LD preservation on MySpleen thanks to the people the people here. Last night I finished English subtitles that can be added for anyone interested.
Today I noticed an interesting line on Wikipedia: "At present, the only existing version of the original uncut roadshow release is on standard definition 480i digital video. It is the source for broadcasts on Turner Classic Movies. " I'm sure it's the same master as the home video releases, but all things considered, it could be even better than a homebrew LD capture. Has anyone ever seen a cap from TCM?

Fyi, The Alamo is available on Amazon Prime Video in HD (not the Road Show, though)

Hi, I am looking for a download of the 1960 THE ALAMO uncut roadshow version.
I have the laserdisc and the VHS but neither of those devices are functional. Can anyone direct me to a site that would have it? Thanks!

Thanks!
Has anyone seen the Koch Media German BD release? https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Alamo...ay/287209/
It was originally announced that it was from the LD's master and on a bonus DVD, but the final release is a BD50 in 720p @ 23.976fps, lossless 2.0 English and German audio, English and German subs. I can't believe one year later I may be retiring that impressive fan preservation disc. Edit: According to someone at blu-ray.com's forums, the appearance seems to be that they took the theatrical HD master, downscaled to 720p and then the LD master, upscaled to 720p and with some color correction, cut in the missing scenes. I don't know if that sounds better or worse.

Sounds like they did a fan restoration.
If they had access to the original LD master an upscale might better than anything we can do. |
