Let's hope the o-neg still exists, Universal are not particularly well known for archiving and there's a possibility that more got destroyed in the backlot fire than they are admitting to.

Doesn't matter if they lost the Oneg as long as they got IPs.

IPs at least have the original look which the Oneg doesn't.

Plus any digital fixes in post usually destroy the small % of definition the Oneg scan brings.

Who knows what year he last saw any of that.  I'm not even sure Gale went in to sign off on the bluray,  I remember someone said that was done by Amblin / Spielberg.

I dont know how they would handle the VFX shots back at the negative level.  I guess the only option would be splicing in from an IP, because no-one wants them to "redo" those shots.

I do remember lots of talk of 8k consumer tvs at CES, but that can be a bunch of dick waving.

The "pro" world should be pushing the boundaries, being a generation or two forward in standards and tech. I hope 8k isn't still the biggest dog on the block.

Don't forget the human eye... what's the point to have 16K (or 32, or 1024) when the human eye, at proper distance, can't discern more than 4K resolution?

It's a bit like audio: I read somewhere (on xiph IIRC, I should have a link into one of my articles somewhere... maybe) that it's almost impossible, even with the best equipment, and by the most trained experts, to distinguish a well mastered 16bit CDDA from a SACD or DVD-Audio at 24bit/192KHz... why? Human ears... and probably age of the listeners!

Or, worst, than 3D; all that hype, and where is it now? Still, 8K is beneficial for film scanning (and 16K would be more), but I don't know if we will ever see a 16K (or higher) display in our houses... I'd follow the HDR path, along with full chroma and less compression (if any), and give passive 3D another chance - with 4K+ display, it would be a lot better than 1080p.

Way too much DNR plus they cheaper out on a wetgate
