[Released] Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - Regraded
#11
Not bad, but still not matching reference material.
That Marion picture is a bit odd. That scene is lit by candles, fire, and lamps that have a yellow filter. And still it looks blueish. Undecided

The scene was colder on the original prints. That print may be a little bit cold (or perhaps his super8 was), it's hard to say, but in that same reel, the other two scene locations look incredibly natural, leading me to believe that a projection wouldn't come out looking that much warmer. On any home video version, probably since the '90s, the scene has been way too warm and red. This carries over to your grade of the BD. I think someone mentioned the scene being re-timed to be warmer on the 1985 theatrical re-release.

Now, of course I'm not trying to say that you should make your project based on anyone else's preferences and specifications. I just think that it's maybe a little silly to say that something isn't reference material simply because a scene doesn't look like it does in a much worse source to reference. Smile

That is how the print looks and it is one of the very rare unfaded 35mm prints out there. It matches up to other 1981 sources quite well. That's how the original prints looked with slight variations in warmth and contrast. The Fuji print currently being worked on has red/pink shift so needs to be corrected for that and does end up warmer. But fuji prints are warmer in general compared to kodak.

Yeah, you're right.
I'm sorry to say that was one scene that looked already good to me (as I said, lit by candles, fire... the yellowish/reddish tones make sense).

There is definitely more red lighting in the shot you posted, just not as much as in most of the home video versions.

Thanks very much.
So only a few shots are actually blueish.

Well, the whole scene is less red, but obviously it gets warmer as more flames fill the building.
