I disagree with Bill Hunt, the audience love a good movie, just look how Joker worked.
We live in a society where people like J.J. Abrams are allowed to destroy years of legacy brand by making bad movies. That's all there is to it, the audience is not guilty. The filmmakers are.

Not seen TROS yet (tickets booked for Digital IMAX tonight) but my opinion of the trilogy is that it was rushed out the door and they made it up as they went along. Rogue One being an exception because I absolutely loved that. but onto the 4K releases, I'm presuming the Disney+ version is basically a taster of what's coming. So more changes for the OT.

Well, without spoiling, TROS seems like Abrams just went "F*** my mystery box? F*** you, Johnson, F*** your whole movie!", and just let pettiness dictate the script, which is devoid of wit or fun. Even the action sequences are rushed, badly planned and uninvolving. I came with zero expectations as to the story side (Since Kasdan was not involved in the script, which was written by Abrams and Chris Terrio, which should, in itself, be taken as a warning), but I still found myself shaking my head at the vindictiveness Abrams shows in his story choices, and the anger that seemed to disable the joy with which he approached TFA.
While TFA is rather empty on story, it was fun, I really enjoyed it and still do. I think the jokes land, the flying sequences are great, and the new characters are involving, if a bit rehashed. with TROS, the barrage of new characters pretty much ensured none of them would be developed, and all of them seem irrelevant to the story. I was very disappointed with the filmmaking, but I can understand those who loved it. It actually made me appreciate ROTJ a lot more, as even though the Ewoks slowed the film down, in its core, it was an actual conclusion to the trilogy, with themes and character arcs that actually seem to have developed across 3 films, rather than tacked on in the last one.

As I understand it, these are the final changes made by Lucas himself before selling to Disney. The Disney+ version is based on the 4K scan and restoration by Reliance Media (formerly Lowry Digital) from 2012. It was originally intended to be used for a 3D conversion, but since nobody went to see Episode I in 3D, the 3D version of ANH was never made and the newly restored 2D master just sat around unused until the launch of Disney+. Therefore, I don't see this as a bunch of new changes. I suspect this marks the final versions of the Original Trilogy Special Editions.

At that price for the set, I hope they include at least score-only soundtracks for every movie.

I have to disagree about Rogue One. It had several issues. It was too dark. It provided a 'diverse cast' so kids of all types could see themselves in the characters in the movie, buy the toys... and then watch them get killed. Finally, the editing was so bad. Watching it was jarring like an amateur fan edit, not a professional film from a major studio. As far as the BD releases, I'm hoping they release three Trilogy versions as well. Then we can pick a choose which films we actually care about. |
