You have to create a cue file with ImgBurn to burn a Redbook cd. Please follow these directions:

Burned the CD using those instructions but unfortunately my LD player won’t play it, tries but nothing starts. Strangely my CD player plays it.

Would the old test WAV work with the new tool? That played fine and I’ve still got the burned CD

How long of a file did you generate? You can try the old WAV, I'm not sure since I haven't tried it but theoretically any WAV file should work as long as its 16bit, 44kHz, Stereo.

3 mins - too long maybe?

Going to try to WAV from the old kit just now

Should be fine, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't super short. That's weird your LD player wasn't cuing the track. What speed do you burn CDs at?

Didn't change that setting in ImgBurn so whatever it defaulted to, do you think slowing it might help?

It's possible. I always use the slowest speed under the drives reported settings to be safe.

Just tried it at 1x there and still the same issue unfortunately. Think I'm cursed!

I've ripped the CD with the old cue file (that works in my LD player) using EAC so will try capturing it again in Reaper then use the new tool to see if the match. I take it it doesnt matter if there's silence at the start & end of the recording?

Correct, just make sure you pick the recording for the right box.
