I finally got my receiver to sync at about 350ms. That’s if I want to use any mode other than game mode. Non hd content requires setting back to 0.

Now I’m trying to figure out the motion handling. It’s rough going from hdcrt/plasma straight to OLED. People talk about judder which is gone but this 24p stutter is REALLY jarring. I’m playing with motion at 1 and black frame insertion modes but I’d rather leave everything untouched.
I don’t know if I can live with the stutter.

What's 24p stutter?

It’s where 24 fps is a lower frame rate and due to the instant ultra fast response of an OLED panel or modern display you see a sort of stuttering movement. Film projectors have shutters which operate between frames so you don’t see this and get disoriented.

OK, I guess it's one of those things that some people are more sensitive towards than others.

There's always an adjustment period when changing display tech. When I first got into projection I had a DLP with a 2x colour wheel and found I was extremely sensitive to the 'rainbow effect' not to the extent that it made me ill but I would see the individual RGB flashes a lot, eventually I adapted to it and now with the newer, faster wheels I don't see rainbows unless I dart my eyes around to force them. Cinema 3D would quite often give me a mean headache but the home version with active shutters I'm fine with, probably because the screen is set up properly for its size.
I'm pretty certain juddery pans are a problem on film as well as flat panels, even with the shutter effect (which is more about reducing visible flicker) I remember slow pans having that judder on 35mm. I think cinematographers had charts with recommended pan speeds based on shutter speed/angle etc to minimise its effect.

I see it, but then I always have and kind of expect it if you know what I mean

On the Sony A1E, which I'm familiar with, setting "Smoothness" to off and "Clearness" to high produces a beautiful 48hz with black frame insertion. It's very close to the look of film projectors.

All this talk of panel tech got me thinking again about the flat CRT technology that never was, SED/FED displays. Both seem to have been forever sunk by corporate politics

The black frame insertion is the one thing that helps slightly without degrading image. There are three settings but each dims the image and going to 3 induces heavy flicker.

Heavy motion scenes are…oh dear.
