UHD BD to BD?
I could be wrong, but I seem to be finding that these new 4K UHD masters are quite consistently screwed up in the same kind of way when they're converted to 1080p for Blu-rays.

I think I commented a while back that I found the 1080p disc in the 4K HELLBOY set to look very violet/purple and that this ruined a lot of the big bold primary reds that should be on Hellboy himself and so on. I also saw from posts earlier in the thread that SPIDER-MAN was turned from bold primary red to a kind of weird magenta/violet as well. Now I'm looking at THE DARK CRYSTAL and it's the same crap all over again. Look at these two screenshots in particular:

New master (1080p SDR version):

For comparison, here's Spider-man from earlier in this thread:

What the hell's going on at the moment? Did somebody just come up with default settings that are very obviously crap, but they're being used for everything?

More examples, though somewhat less egregious ones, from the 2018 UHD-mastered restoration of EVIL DEAD II. This is less of a full-on violet "tint" sort of push, but the white balance is still noticeably thrown off from time to time (not necessarily the whole way through) in the same way that it is on all the other ones I've mentioned and the ones that were already in this thread before I noticed it myself.

I'm wondering, can it be done to match a UHD luma with another chroma?

Assuming both use the same scan. For example, we have the old Der Rabe U matic regrade of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. It uses the same scan as the forthcoming 4K disc from Kino.

Can the UHD luma be extracted, and the chroma from the regrade layed out on top of it?

As here the UHD won't use any HDR.

How, specifically, did you do this? The RipBot264 GUI just has a binary toggle to switch tonemap on or off, with no controls for hue/sat/contrast/brightness, so I'm assuming you must have piped those into either AviSynth or ffmpeg?

If I'm understanding correctly, RipBot264 just looks like a frontend GUI for AviSynth and ffmpeg with some prewritten scripts and functions it imports to configure things. That's neat, but it's less useful if it obfuscates most of the useful configuration, so I suspect I'll end up just manually running my own version of the AviSynth script with suitable ffmpeg encoding settings at the arse end of it, but I'm curious what your own solution was to fiddle with the picture adjustment stuff you've been talking about.

I haven't used RipBot in a while but from memory you click tonemap 'on' and the select 'Avisynth' which opens up a new menu with hue, brightness etc

Great to have you back Pipefan btw, hope all's well..

Ah. No, for some reason, that didn’t happen. I did hit that AviSynth button but it didn’t bring up those options. I wonder why… I already had AviSynth (and AviSynth+, and VirtualDub etc.) installed long before RipBot264, so I wonder if that’s related.

I appreciate that, thank you. Likewise, hope you’ve been getting on OK.

Maybe check the RipBot settings - make sure it's pointing to your AviSynth install?

I will, but I should have been clearer: the button does something, just not that. I think it just brought up the script to let me edit it or similar, I can’t fully recall. Will fart about with it later, thank you for clarifying somewhat.
