ALIENS - PREGRADE

i think the magenta or saturation needs to be backed off a touch as this makes a few characters look like they are wearing lipstick, its nearly there for sure.

Thanks everybody. I'm taking all this on board and making adjustments. Trouble is I try something that looks great but I've got to check against on-set shots to make sure I'm getting it close to what was intended. Sometimes I have no reference so it becomes like a puzzle, trying to figure out what looks correct in terms of contrast and exposure, light sources and balance. It's a mad process but I'm loving it and learning tonnes of Resolve techniques.

For light and exposure, the 35mm scan might be worthy. It's probably not colorwise as it's a Rob's Nostalgia Project and he keeps ruining the scans on that aspect, but for brightness, it might be okay.

Cheers dude. I found a few clips of that on YT but can't get my hands on the whole thing.

Yeah V1 of Rob's scan I think nails it, and some of your color timing comes pretty close.

Yeah, the video transfers are too bright. What’s the purpose for the Marines to have a flashlight on their shoulders when investigating the corridors in the colony if it’s bright as daylight in there? The 35mm scan makes way more sense regarding the dim brightness and black crush for the sci-fi horror mood it's supposed to convey to an audience already well aware aliens can hide amongst cables and pipes on the walls as seen in the 1st film.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't James Cameron himself requested little-to-natural lighting during shooting this film to capture the intended dark atmospheric feel? I also heard that majority of Aliens was shot under pure blue (NOT teal by the way, only pure blue alone) lighting too to enhanced that dark sci-fi feel as well.
