Universal Monsters: Undo BD 'fixes'
#21
BTW. In the Invisible Man, at the end just before the "revealing" of Claude Rains face, didn't the girl and the father left the hospital room before the revealing effect happen ? I remember to have seen it that way before in the first DVD release (unless I'm mistaking). Anybody can confirm this ? Because on the Blu-ray it seems to be cut in a way that both the girl and the father are staying there at the revealing, but once the face is fully appeared and during the back traveling shot, we can see that both characters are no longer there.

Can anybody check this out please ?

Not to my knowledge. My memory of that seen even going back to watching it on VHS was the girl starting to cry near the bedside and her father coming over and putting his hands on her shoulders before cutting to the reveal.

Yeah, so about Dracula Restored... So, some good news and bad news...

The bad- the hard drive on which I was working completely crashed, and I have no idea if the data is recoverable. For now, it seems the project files are gone for good, along with my Help! project and a yet unannounced project that will likely remain forever unannounced. The testing BD ISO was also lost in the crash.

The good- I burned the BD ISO a few hours ago with no verification errors. It was intended to be a test disc, but is fantastic, save for one thing: in one of the fade-outs, a brief frame from the original subsequent scene is visible just as it turns to black. YMMV on how irritating it is, but the video quality is certainly superior to the original Restored Cut.

Keep in mind the commercial cut of the film had a flash frame during a fade too, in the form of the original title card! Smile

I'll probably upload it to MEGA.

Ouch. Sorry to hear about that. Let us know about the developments on this. Hope you will recover everything.

About the title card, I hope it's usable with the actual BD and it's tempered opening credits. Where is it located on the retail BD ?

Ok. After re-watching (and listening the audio carefully) of The Invisible Man, I think each of the Universal movies have some over scrubbed audio and some elements are missing now because they've been taken as defaults (dirts or anything else). Does anybody knows if the audio on the LDs are uncompressed ? Because they may come handy in order to bring back some of those missing elements missing. If the HDTV unrestored files gets available here, that might be just as good. I'll stay away from the DVD because they might be too compressed to be useble (quality wise), but in the last resort they might be useful too.

Criss, what do you have (aside of the vhs) in your collection about the Uni Monsters (DVD, LD, prints, etc) ? BTW, Speaking of LDs, can you tell me more about those special LDs that were made out of the original nitrate negative transfers ? Are they the same than the Japanese LDs that you already have in your procession ?

Aluminum Falcon, can you check what is available on CG for the the Universal Monsters HDTV movies ?

Thanks to answer

I have most of the of the US DVDs and VHS'. Im not exactly sure which versions are on the Japan LDs since I never had a chance to view them. I got them mostly for collecting purposes. I assume since theyre from 1993 they use the same masters as the VHS editions from that time. I further assume this since it was also pointed out in the Frankenstein Audio thread that the VHS and LD audios sampled for the project were virtually identical including having the 'God' line cut out.

I do happen to have a nice capture of Creature From The Black Lagoon from VHS that I did myself for my daughter. I happen to think it turned out rather nice. If it could be useful for something I'd be happy to share it.

It comes from the MCA Classic Collection VHS.
