OK, enconding ended. It seems everything worked well. Now I have to watch the movie, write down the artefact frames, then replace them with second color matching, and it should be over. Tomorrow (actually today, but after...) I plan to finish it - at least, the main movie. But I also plan to take a look at MultiAVCHD again, and see if I can remember enough to make a simple menu. Encoding was fast this time, really fast... I love this beeg black block!

Finished to watch the rest of the encoded movie; you know what? No artefacts, nothing... mmh... too good to be true, right? Well, I came back to the first encoded part - the one which crashed, and they are there. But they are not present in the new version - the one I was forced to make because, well, the old one crashed...
Long story short: not only the famous ColourMatch now doesn't crash, but it does not produce artefacts anymore!!! So, after three years and a half, thousands hours of tests, hundred revisions, I could say that, *maybe*, I finally reached a great result! To be sure, now, I must test it with The Matrix: do you remember how many shots were artefacts-ridden, right? Well, if it will be without artefacts, then ColourMatch will be simply perfect...

I burned the first version already and I enjoy it. I guess now it's going to have a partner in the case with it.

I guess that, once you get the new version, you could always use the old disc as cup holder!
Really, at the time I made it, it was great, but the new one, using a better source, and improved regrading techniques, is waaay better... the only missing... "thing" is the German multichannel track; now, if one of our German users would like to provide it, I would add it, but you should act fast, as I'd like to (finally) release it ASAP!

Looking forward to this spoRv. Sure you know already, Arrow in the UK are doing their own version this year, but at this time it is not known if it will be Scream's transfer or a new 4K from the negative.

What, Arrow will release a new version? Mmmh... should I wait, or I will be forced to do a 3.0?!? Well, obviously, with my usual good luck, what seems to good to be true, was, of course, not true... the revised edition is artefact-free, but the colors are not so close as the previous version... this could be noted only doing an A/B comparison, because, even if not so close, they are better than the BD. So now I step back to the previous version, doing some tweaks, and right now I'm "trying" to encode it without crash - hope everything will go well. At the end, it will result with some artefacts, that will be replaced with another version. Sorry to delay this further, but it seems I encounter a problem after another; good news, I learn from my mistakes, and slowly improve the script - which, in comparison with the first revision, is a lot better.

Finished the encoding using the best matching script - in just less than five hours, that's the right time for an HD encoding!!!
 by the way, yesterday I did an x264 test encoding, and speed was around 24fps, so a two pass would take just twice the time of a movie, hence less than four hours for this movie; so, raw total video encoding time should stay below ten hours - in comparison to several days with the old PC...Before doing all, I discovered that one artefact was due also to a frame not in sync, so now the very noticeable ridden shot is not so very noticeable...  Tomorrow I'll watch the whole movie (again) to spot eventual other problematic frames, and replace them with another script. I was a bit downhearted about all of this lately, but at the same time spurred to improve the old version which used to crash every time - indeed, now, even if artefacts are there, no crash at all, so in the future I could let the new PC encode a whole movie during the night, without be forced to stay there and check when the crash occurred, and then modify the script with the new frames, and so on, several times... a lot of time saved now! Went to see The Thing at this last night:
http://glasgowfilm.org/glasgow-film-fest...-factor-18 Was definitely a different source than either of the current blu-rays - no DNR, no sharpening and white snow! (when it should be white) Couldn't really tell if it was a 4k or 2k DCP from where I was sitting but it looked beautiful. It was hellishly cold though... |
