Ultra HD / 4K movies
#31
Just buy yourself a 1080 one. 4K is useless. It's only great for shooting ans mastering and maybe archiving but when you know that a lot of movies these days are still mastered in 2K and that not all the theatres are equiped with 4K projectors... it makes you think about 4K TVs. Future proofing is a valid arguement though.

I love my 4k TV and disc collection.
I also have a ton of the Sony downloads stored for non HDR posterity

I can't resist, don't buy 4K until the sources are 4K or 8K and there are very few sources in 4K/8K currently.

Agree that would be better to get UHD movies with 4K (or higher) master; but it's not (only) resolution; HDR seems to add a lot to a movie; plus, don't forget there are also those "halfway" ones - with masters higher than 2K but lower than 4K.

Also, if the master is "fresh", the result could be better on UHD, even using mere 2K masters.

My 2c, as usual! Wink

I prefer 1080p until we have very good 4K/8K releases and because we don't have very good 1080p releases, there is no reason to consider 4K/8K releases yet.

Color is a different issue than resolution, however, while HDR can be good, its more marketing than anything.

There's a lot of talk online on how UHD blu rays have better grain preservation than 1080p blu rays, even on 2K 'upscales' which should look identical.

Don't forget that 2K masters are scanned at 2048x1536/1556 pixels, so anamorphic prints would be noticeably better than final 1080p resolution of 1920x800/820 - and not-anamorphic prints would be a bit better as well.

It's the 10bit 4:2:2 that offers the color benefit over the HDR.
