Colorize black & white video
#21
Never used panoregister, even if I'm too curious to see some results - yes, too lazy to do it by myself!

AutoOverlay (PKA AutoAlign) works wonderfully! I know I'm still learning how to use it properly (the author knows it, too! Big Grin ) but I can say you can indeed do what you want: overlay just the chroma of the DVD, retaining the luma of the BD.

Of course, as written by Tom, if the DVD frame is smaller than BD, borders not covered will not be treated, so you have to crop (eventually) BD to get the same DVD frame size. If, at the contrary, DVD frame size is bigger, you can always have the center image in HD, and borders in SD.

If the wobbling is not exagerated, the script would align well, but of course the wobbled colors will still be in the result.
You can always try to manually correct the source using WarpedResize and Q2R by V.C.Mohan

Now that I have the storage space, I might render out some lossless shots, ones taken from the BD, cropped to the 4x3 image area and some upscaled via superresolution shots of the 4x3 colorized DVD. NOT on my priority list, but I want to check this out on some test shots...

Thanx for the suggestion, my friend; )

. . demonstrates that "the right color" is more important than "the perfect pixel alignment". If you're not an artist with an eye for color, you must use a natural-color equivalent as your guide for it to look good (mostly the 1990 version).

I thought on first sight the 1990 looked better from the "feel" but from reading the comment section the 2013 version is apparently actually more accurate - might use a little luma tweaking but otherwise I think its fine too

Dunno... I like something of one version, and dislike other things from the other, and vice versa... maybe a regrade of the 2013 as 1990, merged together with the original 2013 would lead to better colors, who knows?

A wider search on YouTube did bring up an on-the-set amateur 8mm movies (in real color) . .

. . and this reconstruction of the set (probably at The Lucy Desi Museum) . .

That's what I meant about an artist's eye. The mind just smooths over perception too much. We really need guides to do colorization justice. Unless it's George Lucas Certified™, of course.  Big Grin
