The Matrix Open Matte / Original Colour?
#71
Well glad you are doing a cap of the LD Zoidberg, that way we can finally put an end to this mystery.

I've capped the LaserDisc. To my eyes it's very close to the original DVD although the LD is slightly more saturated with slightly brighter shadow details. Nothing really stands out as being differently colour timed.

I've made an x264 MKV of the cap (2GB), it's by no means definitive as I have not got a video capture card up and running yet, this capture was obtained by recording to DVD (Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD Recorder, composite in) and ripping the DVDs to PC. The only adjustments were IVTC/Decimate and levels adjustment. The audio is a transcode of the AC3 file generated by the DVD recorder (which admittedly sounds pretty good), I will be making the bit-perfect PCM available later (but very soon). The 5.1 AC3 track will follow shortly. I've synced this to the DVD for those who want to compare, PM for the link.

Here are some comparison shots (Original DVD top, LD bottom)

Thanks for capping it Zoidberg. I'm glad you finally settle the DVD is different then the laserdisc debate.

Thanks zoidberg!

It seems that, apart slight differences due to analog nature of the laserdisc format and eventual ones due to DVD recorder, the master is the same used for the DVD.

The side by side comparison I saw on the Laserdisc usenet group ages ago must have been really screwy. It was just one scene though.

Why must these things be sooooooooo far away from where I live??

Wow, that finally settles the long standing debate. The color differences are extraordinarily slight and are due to mastering down to composite video. Same master. This seems like the exact thing I've noticed when comparing DVD ports and early discs to their LD older brother that shares the same master. The letterboxed VHS looks this way as well-just imagine an even more washed out and very crummy version of the LD capture.

The big difference will be if the 384 kbp/s LD 5.1 is any different to the 384 kbp/s DVD 5.1 in mastering. And of course it's nice to finally have the PCM 2.0 downmix.

Thanks very much for finally solving this one.

Just discovered that both MPEG-2 and AVC HDTV cap have a glitch in the same frames:

I don't think AVC is a re-encoding of the old MPEG-2; even if the master used by the broadcasters was corrupted seems not so probable...
