I agree as well. If the audio is 5.1 native, then the stereo is useless and should be discarded unless there is something unique about it
Great news about Waterworld being nearly ready Andrea!
I would personally keep it for the sake of completeness unless it really is bringing nothing new to the table. What average video bitrate could you get with and without that audio track being included?

about 17mbps Vs 19mbps - not a great increase, yes, but could make the difference in retaining film grain... or not?!?

Hmm, actually now that you mention it, generated grain does have a way of being more video bitrate hungry than normal grain, I know that from my own The Phantom Menace regrained edition. I've changed my mind, you shouldn't include it IMHO, your generated grain will need as much video bitrate as possible.

I'm sure you've answered this question before - sorry if so - but why use the analogue track from the laserdisc rather than digital PCM?
Since the Dolby (SR) mix was used theatrically, there is some wisdom in including it for posterity - it's the way that many would have heard it originally, after all.

Just because I was too lazy to find out the AC3/PCM title, when I had the DTS/analog version I used to capture DTS track under my hands... and also to know how good an analog track on recent laserdiscs could be - is quite good...
There was a long debate on OT and LDDB (and maybe somewhere else) about the fact if Cinema DTS was 4.0 or 5.0... can't rememeber something about SR track, though!

Yeah, I went through that thread for a refresher. Disclord (who usually knew his stuff) started by suggesting that the theatrical DTS mix was 4.0, though this was refuted by one of the film's sound mixers who said that they worked in 5.1 (and the folks who took a good look at Jetrell Fo's cinema DTS and found 5.1 properly discrete tracks).
That said, the engineers would have mixed down to 4.0 channels for Lt Rt matrixed Dolby SR and DTS Stereo (which may be where the confusion arose). If you're going for a DL BD (as suggested in that other thread), go for it... if not, I don't think anyone's going to complain about theatrical authenticity when the original DTS track is present and correct. |
