What do you guys would think of putting up a thread listing all DVDs with different mixes? I just realised for example, that Mission Impossible 1996 have the Dolby Surround track as an extra on the original DVD, same goes for Payback, and many more. Those tracks have disappeared from re-releases. Also have french dolby surround tracks.
I think there should be a resource not only for original languages, but also foreign dubs before they were remixed for 5.1. We could limit them to english, french, german, italian & spanish. That's a lot of original mixes and dubs that are begone now and only old DVDs of them remains.

Most (not all) early Paramount dvds had a surround mix alongside the 5.1 mix, likewise Fox did the same.

It depends on the country release. I also found Payback french DVD with the open matte version on the other side, and the mix on the open matte sounds better than the widescreen side. It's weird. The R1 DVD I have only have the widescreen version, with the dolby surround mixes and different bonuses.

So the new adage I invented "never throw away your DVDs and LDs" was quite useful...
Just found out that the DVD R1 of Blue Steel by Kathryn Bigelow has Both french and english audio tracks in Dolby Surround ports from the LDs.
On Blu-ray it's remixed in 5.1. I have the open matte LD, the other side of the DVD looks to be open matte too. I need to get one of those. |
