idea: letterbox + open matte variable aspect ratio
#1
Lightbulb
We all know there are some releases with variable aspect ratio - usually IMAX 1.89:1 or 1.78:1 mixed with OAR 2.35:1 or 2.40:1.

But I still have to see a OAR 1.85:1 (or slightly opened to 1.78:1) mixed with open matte 1.33:1... (am I right?)
And I know for sure there are some fullscreen DVDs with many scenes with have more image details on top and bottom (and few lost on both sides); it would be an interesting idea for new projects.

Opinions?

Wasn't there an open matte 1.33:1 BTTF which opened up to 1.85:1 for the optical composites (which were hard matted)?

I was referring to commercially released versions; are there any?

Yep, I'm aware of BTTF and TDK - and I like them! Ok

Indeed, I would like to see more projects like these; PDB, have you named this technique yet?

Not really a technique since its just editting, so don't think it needs a name per say. I just call the results variable aspect ratio but that's not a process, just what it is.

I've used so far

Original Aspect Ratio 2.35:1
Aspect Ratio 1.78:1 Open Matte

since now, and I would use

Aspect ratio 1.78:1 Open Matte / Pan & Scan

for Harry Potter.

So, what to write in an eventual cover, to let the user know what kind of video is included?

I think

Variable Aspect Ratio 2.35:1 OAR / 1.33:1 Open Matte (or IMAX?) (for TDK)
Variable Aspect Ratio 1.33:1 / 1.78 Open Matte (for BTTF)

would do, using first the aspect ratio used for most part of the movie.
