Maybe some judicious degraining of the Blu-ray's obvious, artificial regraining (image is forum-reduced to fit here; right-click & view image to see magnified) ..
.. will make for a better picture and help blend into other sources?

May be a good idea, but please, explain the advantage of degraining the three channels separately... would you use different settings for each channel?

What happened to the idea of using just the HDTV caps and eschewing the BD? I thought that at some point (probably on ot.com) it was established that they had more detail than the BD and/or that it was preferable to use them because they hadn't been tinkered with as much.

This is the facts:
1) BD - you know it
2) WOWOW - maybe better details, different colors, blown out whites (as you can see in picture #1), different framing - sometimes with more details, again pic #1
3) Channel 1 - open matte, it *should* reflect perfectly the BD, but is has that TV logo (residual traces on pic #3, but hey, it was a quick test, after all! ) lower bitrate than WOWOW, and color grading a bit different from BD
Plan is to find a fit-for-all settings for colors/brightness/contrast (I'm pretty sure there is) to get the Channel 1 open matte as closer as possible to BD, slap the BD upon it - eventually merging it to obtain a tiny bit more details, but don't know if it's the case, use the WOWOW when frame contains more details than BD - eventually using open matte slices to fill the screen, but bottom corners would be missing, and replacing them with inpaint filter could probably result in a mess - and finally regrade it as I did with my previous project, 50/50 LD/BD.
Easy, huh?

Where is the WOWOW available? Is it 1080i MPEG-2? If so, what's the bitrate?

Can't remember where I found it... the usual Russian tracker, perhaps?
1080i, 21mbps avg 24mbps max, special edition, with few WOWOW logo appearances - can't remember, but maybe three or four during the whole movie, each lasts a dozen second.

What about the other cap? Is it no use?

I don't know, Andrea -- the other big one. It was a long time ago, and I don't remember if I still have it. I'll have a look for it, but as you know, I don't have any upload space at present.
And (truth be told) I'm not that big of an Aliens fan and don't care much about open-matte releases. *runs away*
