Project Info
Yeah I know, not the best film but I enjoy it for what it is. Let me explain.
So I've been fixing my NAS for months (lost two HDDs) and was going through the list of movies and saw my rip of Phantoms. I bought the budget BD long ago since it was $5 and I have fond memories of watching the movie late, late at night with my brother almost 20 years ago That and I enjoy a simple but well done B sci-fi movie especially one a bit derivative of The Thing.
I wanted to watch the movie but found it lacking in the video department. So, like any good fanres member I had to fix it first before I watched it.
I converted the 1080i video (clearly a broadcast master) back to 1080p/23.976. The BD was also framed at 1.77 and I slightly letterboxed it back to a theatrical 1.85. The video has that nasty pink/magenta blanket applied to it. I checked the old DVD (which is from a LD master) and the trailers and noticed they didn't have that look and that both appeared more green and yellow. I matched that look but didn't go as far yellow as to keep the titles and credits more pure white.
I don't expect a lot of interest given its a junky movie but this is one of a few small, one-off projects that I'm going to put out in the next few months in between the "real" projects. Probably only will be shared here and not on a share site.
Video:
The US BD IVTC'd back to 23.976, letterboxed to 1.85 and regraded to better match the DVD and trailer.
Audio:
1. DTS-HD MA 5.1 from the BD

I like that movie! Watched few weeks ago on laserdisc, and yes, it's a nice flick that passes usually under the radar, even if actors are quite famous.
My usually constructive critics:
- perfect magenta removal, but I'd subtract just a bit of green
- please, leave the open matte - I'm a sucker for that or, at least, release both versions!
May you need the LD track(s)? PCM and/or AC-3? Don't expect an express service, but it could be done - in the near future...

Thanks spoRv, glad you like the movie too.
1. Less green starts to make the white end credits and the skies pink again. That's the minimum amount of green needed to get white back to some semblance of white (white balance and all that). Also checking LUT for film stocks of the time put it at that level of green but I'll look at it.
2. I think I'm going to keep it at 1.85 spoRv. The BD is 1.77 as an alternative if someone needs it. I like open mattes also as fun alternatives but always prefer theatrical accurate release first. Hence the 1.85.
Thanks for the offer of another soundtrack but in this case the production was digital discrete sound so the PCM 2.0 is not needed. The DTS-HD MA 5.1 is pretty good and better then the AC-3 on the DVD and I doubt there is any remixing done unless you feel otherwise.

Ha ha ha -- dvdmike beat me to it.
Glad to know others enjoy this one, too! I always thought it got a bad rap. Thanks for showing it some love, PDB!

I have a copy of this ready, haven't extensively tested it but it looks good so far even with the scan being an older one (soft but luckily no EE). The file is a little less than 15GB with DTS-HDMA 5.1. If you want to test a copy, drop me a PM.
I'll keep it hosted for a couple of weeks since I don't think I'll share it anywhere else.

If you haven't downloaded this yet please don't. Doombot found a small sync error at the end which I'm going to fix up this weekend
